Chapter 1: The Mitten Sets Out

Evening comes to the harbour. The water laps soft against the dock. The boat creaks like a rocking chair.

⟨Character 1⟩: Coils the rope in his hands. Watches ⟨Character 2⟩ near the boat lights.

⟨Character 1⟩: Care with the lamp there, ⟨Character 2⟩. That wheel turns clumsy in the wind.

⟨Character 2⟩: Holds the lamp with both mittens. The mitten on his right hand stays quiet.

⟨Character 2⟩: Little lamp hum, do you dream? The boat says creak and the ropes say nothing.

The mitten slips from ⟨Character 2⟩'s pocket, unnoticed. It gazes at the snow, still listening.

Gull: Feathers rumple. Beak lifted against the wind.

Gull: Warm hands sleep way up the rise, close by the harbor lamp. If a mitten wants home, it walks firm and sure-footed.

Mitten: Yarn parts in a whistle. A puff of frozen breath escapes its tender wool. No one above the wind can call this shy little gasp a true cry.

Mitten: A hand. Then all this sleep and mud and icy sheen may make a soft high tune in me once more.

⟨Character 1⟩ turns from his ropes and sees ⟨Character 2⟩, patting his coat pocket with one brown mitten bare.

⟨Character 1⟩: Sets the coil down. Looks around at the dock boards and dark water.

⟨Character 1⟩: Sweeping now her view on matters: whence the mitten slept in blizzards? Hand has vanished to no cold green.

⟨Character 2⟩: Gone, but perhaps his one wee sock thumb only tripped in the drift now three fathoms steep. Did any wind comb under milk rim sky? Slipped to hook under her garment too much taller than the hands God grew us.

⟨Character 1⟩: Quick and solid, he steps surefoot toward the dock storeroom where the safety lamp burns each single creature winter awake. Enough, snowfox on a rope. Night nor engine will draw tighter his clear breath.

⟨Character 1⟩: Now we creep gentle up harness and deck rim he murmurs, taking the search to stormward unholstering his own solitary plan.

Chapter 2: The Harbour Hums

Night sets in over the snowy hill. The wind pauses, the snowdrifts rest. The lamp below waits with its soft hum.

⟨Character 1⟩: A harbour... it’s a safe place for boats. A place out of the storm, where the water is still. Where they rest and keep warm. That’s what I’m being tonight.

⟨Character 1⟩: A kitten call? No. There. A little thumb, bent like a chimney. ⟨Character 2⟩’s mitten, stuck in the snow.

Mitten: Harbour.

⟨Character 1⟩: Found you. No more wandering, little one. ⟨Character 2⟩’s hand is still cold, waiting for you by the lamp.

⟨Character 1⟩ tucks the mitten into his pocket and hurries back down the hill, the lamp’s glow like a hand reaching out to guide him.

Inside the boat cabin, the heater breathes a warm glow. ⟨Character 2⟩ sits on ⟨Character 1⟩’s lap, watching the mitten steam.

⟨Character 2⟩: It needed a harbour.

⟨Character 1⟩: We gave it one. Now your hand can be warm too.

⟨Character 1⟩: There. All tucked in. Now we rest together. Patience is its own kind of brave.

⟨Character 2⟩: Brave like the mitten, and the harbour light.

The cocoa steam curls into the warm air. The lamp hums its quiet tune. ⟨Character 2⟩’s eyes close, and ⟨Character 1⟩ watches the snow fall beyond the glass, all of them safe.

All is well. The harbour holds you safe. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, Gull, and Mitten.

A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩, when you wait for something you need, how do you keep your hands warm inside?
