Chapter 1: The Ember After

The room is warm and dark except the stove, and ⟨Character 1⟩ sits on a low stool with ⟨Character 2⟩ curled in his lap, winding the empty kite spool.

⟨Character 1⟩: There now, ⟨Character 2⟩. The kite is hanging by the door and the letter is somewhere up in that cloud, where the slipknot let it go to deliver our thanks. The wind has gone to sleep outside. I am glad it came home.

⟨Character 2⟩: Arf! I chased the runaway kite, ⟨Character 1⟩. It flew too high and too fast, but I kept my eyes on the red tail the whole time.

⟨Character 1⟩: You stayed right by my boot when the string went slack. You called out when the wind shifted. You were my brave first mate.

⟨Character 2⟩: Did the clouds get the letter, ⟨Character 1⟩? I sniffed the tail when it came down, and the slipknot was wide open. The paper was gone, so the letter must be up there with the clouds now.

⟨Character 1⟩: Look, ⟨Character 2⟩. That last red light in the stove is an ember.

⟨Character 2⟩: What is an ember, ⟨Character 1⟩? I see the tiny red glow in the grey ash. Does it bite like the fire did before?

⟨Character 1⟩: An ember is the last warm bit of coal after the fire calms down. It does not bite; it only holds heat. And it keeps heat for a long time, like a small kindness that keeps working after you think it is done.

⟨Character 2⟩: The letter was a small kindness too, ⟨Character 1⟩. You thanked the clouds for the rain that filled your water barrel. The clouds might keep that kindness warm, just like the ember keeps heat.

⟨Character 1⟩: You are right, ⟨Character 2⟩. And you carried the spool home without dropping it once. That was a kindness to me, and it will keep me warm all night.

⟨Character 2⟩: My legs are tired and my ears are sleepy. The ember is getting smaller and smaller.

⟨Character 1⟩: Sleep if you want, ⟨Character 2⟩. I will keep watch a little longer. The kite is safe by the door, and the letter is safe above the cloud.

Chapter 2: The Kite’s Errand

On the hilltop, ⟨Character 1⟩ kneels with a red kite, a folded letter, and a ball of twine; ⟨Character 2⟩ circles, sniffing the kite’s patched orange tail.

⟨Character 1⟩: Hold still, ⟨Character 2⟩. This letter is for the clouds. It says thank you for the rain that filled my water barrel last week. I am folding it small and tying it to the tail with a slipknot, so the cloud’s damp can loosen the loop when it is time.

⟨Character 2⟩: I can hold the spool, ⟨Character 1⟩! Let me run with it, and the string will unroll behind me. It hums like a tiny bee, and I am in charge of the ground. When I drop the spool, I will bark twice to show I am ready.

A warm gust pushes across the hill, and the kite leaps from ⟨Character 1⟩’s hand, climbing fast; the string pulls hard and warms his palm.

⟨Character 1⟩: It is a runaway now, ⟨Character 2⟩. Let the spool go, and it will find the low cloud. See how the red fabric glows against the grey, almost like an ember. It is dipping into the cloud, and the slipknot loosens. The letter lifts off the tail and drifts up into the bright edge, where the clouds are taking it.

⟨Character 2⟩: The kite is coming back down, ⟨Character 1⟩. Catch it by the frame, not the tail! The tail is empty, and the slipknot is wide open, so the letter is gone. Sniff, sniff, I smell the cloud on the string.

⟨Character 1⟩: The kite did deliver the letter. See the loose slipknot? The clouds opened it themselves, and the letter is up there with them now. Look, a sunbeam breaks through the grey. That is their reply, a little light saying thank you back to us.

⟨Character 2⟩: I will carry the empty spool home, ⟨Character 1⟩. Let’s walk down the hill together, and you can tell me the story of the kite and the clouds one more time. My legs are tired, but I am proud of our errand.

Rest easy, you two. You did a good thing today. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩.

A question for tonight
What small kindness could you tie to the wind and send up to the clouds, ⟨Character 1⟩ or ⟨Character 2⟩?
