Chapter 1: The Hum in the Pocket
Dusk settles over the garden, and the moonflowers are not open yet.
⟨Character 1⟩: The pocket is humming like a little warm machine. Oh, a seed, round and soft, humming the same tune as my coat. I will plant you near the moonflowers, where the ground is cool. It is not bedtime yet, and the moonflowers hear me, I think.
⟨Character 1⟩: Grow, please. The seed glows so bright the ground shivers. A green ladder shoots up through the dark, one rung at a time. I am trying the first rung with both hands, and it is taller than the pear tree.
Halfway up in the dark, the ladder sways. The night air is cool and full of cricket song.
⟨Character 1⟩: One, two, three. I can do this all by myself, even when it sways, and my sleeves keep sliding over my hands. I will roll them up and keep going. No bed for me yet, I am not even tired.
⟨Character 1⟩: The seed slipped up my sleeve, but I caught it. Back in the pocket it goes, still humming. Now I can hold the rungs tight, and my hands are warm again. The rungs feel like sun-warm wood.
⟨Character 1⟩: Is anybody there? The ladder keeps leaning to one side. I think I need a steady hand, even though I can do it myself. I do not want to fall, and it is higher than I thought.
Star Tender: I can see you from here, and you are closer than you think. It is a long climb to the harbour. Mind the sway, and hold the rope if you need it. I will not let you slip.
⟨Character 1⟩: Harbour? What does that mean? I have never heard that word before. Is it a place on the ladder, like a resting place, and I only came for a star, because I want to know very much?
Chapter 2: A Harbour at the Top
The ladder steadies as they climb the last rungs, and the air grows soft with starlight.
Star Tender: A harbour is a safe place where boats rest after a long sail, and tired climbers can rest too. The top of this ladder is a harbour for you. You do not have to climb alone, and it is all right to ask for help. Take this glowing rope, and I will steady you the rest of the way.
⟨Character 1⟩: I am not tired, and I could climb a hundred more rungs by myself. But the sway makes my hands grip too tight, and my arms feel heavy. Okay, I will take the rope, but only for a little while. Thank you for helping me.
At the top, the ladder opens into a small platform of soft light, and the stars are close enough to touch.
⟨Character 1⟩: This star hums the same tune as my coat, like it knows me from the pocket. I planted a seed that grew all the way up here, and now I can touch a star and it glows on my fingers. It is not scary at all, it is warm like a lamp in my room.
Star Tender: Now you can water the roots on your way down, and the seed will stay strong for another climb. Hold the rope, and we will go slowly together, one rung at a time. The ladder will not sway while I am with you.
⟨Character 1⟩: I am in my bed now with my coat still on, and your hum sounds like the seed and the star and the ladder all together. Will you stay until I fall asleep? I am not scared of the dark because your glow is here, and it feels like a harbour for me too.
Star Tender: I will stay and hum, and you can let your eyes close. The seed is watered, the ladder is still, and you are safe, like a boat in a harbour after a long night of sailing. Sleep now, ⟨Character 1⟩.
The story is finished, and everyone is safe and warm. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, Star Tender.
