The Castle of Quiet Hours
4 chapters for 1 character · about 4 minutes · told 0 times. Velvet corridors, a sleepy dragon no bigger than a cat, and a tower that hums. The highlighted parts are filled in with your own characters when you make this story yours.
Chapter 1: The Evening Hush
Somewhere a clock was ticking more slowly than usual. The evening had come to ⟨home⟩, and ⟨Character 1⟩ were doing the last small things before sleep.
First there was ⟨Character 1⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. Tonight they were already half asleep, the way you are when the day has been full and kind.
The glass had gone soft with light. Candles that lit themselves one by one along the corridor rested there, and the slow tick of a clock as tall as a door seemed to be asking, very gently, to come in.
"We'll be back before anyone notices," said ⟨Character 1⟩, which is what everyone says at the start of a very gentle adventure. The room smelled of beeswax and old books.
Chapter 2: How the Journey Began
Outside the window waited a staircase that unrolled from the window like a ribbon and led upward into the dark. It did not hurry them. Good things, it seemed to know, are never in a hurry.
They floated past a mouse in a nightcap. ⟨Character 1⟩ waved, and a mouse in a nightcap seemed to wave back. A little later they passed a tapestry whose stitched birds were asleep, already fast asleep.
A dragon no bigger than a cat named Pimble was waiting for them at the Castle of Quiet Hours. "Hello, ⟨Character 1⟩," said Pimble, in a voice crackly and warm, like a tiny fire in a big fireplace. "Walk with me. Slowly, please."
⟨Character 1⟩ asked where they were going. "Nowhere in particular," said Pimble. "That is the best kind of place at this hour." They found that they agreed.
Chapter 3: A Small Kindness
A little way into the Castle of Quiet Hours, they heard a sound that was not a sleeping sound. It was small and worried, and it came from behind a stone.
It was a young ghost. It was too shy to float through walls and had got stuck in a cupboard. ⟨Character 1⟩ knelt down so as not to seem too tall, and said, "Hello. We can help, if you like."
It did not take long. Around a bend, under candles that lit themselves one by one along the corridor, they found the place a young ghost had been looking for. "Thank you," it said, and it meant it twice.
"You see," said Pimble, "the night is not for being brave. It is for being gentle." ⟨Character 1⟩ yawned, and the yawn seemed to agree.
Chapter 4: The Long Way Home
When it was time to go, Pimble did not say goodbye. "Goodnight," it said instead, which is a softer word, and the right one.
⟨Character 1⟩ closed their eyes, just to see what it felt like. It felt like beeswax and old books, and like floating, and like being exactly where they should be.
⟨Character 1⟩ was already asleep, one hand still holding the edge of the blanket. ⟨Character 1⟩ tucked it in a little closer, the way you do.
And then they were home, in ⟨home⟩, in their own beds, with the window closed and the room smelling faintly of beeswax and old books. Had they gone anywhere at all? The pillow knew, and did not say.
Somewhere far away, Pimble smiled and settled down to sleep as well. The tall clock ticked, and ticked, and the castle breathed in time with it. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight.
Remember: every castle is just a house that learned to keep secrets gently. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩.
A question for tonight
What do you think Pimble dreams about when the story is over?
