Chapter 1: The Day of the Parade
The garden path is warm and speckled with morning light. ⟨Character 1⟩ the turtle is twirling her patched red-and-yellow umbrella, humming a bouncy tune.
⟨Character 1⟩: La la la, step step step, today I march with all my friends!
⟨Character 1⟩: Hey, little ladybug! Wait up! I want to march beside you!
Ladybug: Sorry, ⟨Character 1⟩! The parade starts at the big sunflower! You’ll have to go fast, and you’re so slow!
The ladybug is gone in a flash. ⟨Character 1⟩ looks down the long path. Her little legs feel like tiny pebbles. She looks at the umbrella in her hand and gets an idea.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’ll roll! I’ll tuck inside my umbrella and roll down the hill. Fast fast fast! Ready, set, go!
She folds herself inside the umbrella and gives a big kick. Down she goes, bumping and zigzagging, past rocks and over a twig, until she thumps to a stop at the huge elm root.
⟨Character 1⟩: Oh my. My head is spinning like a whirligig. But I’m closer to the parade, right?
She pulls herself out of the umbrella and shakes her shell. A little dandelion seed floats down and sticks to her sleeve. She looks at the steep path back. Rolling up is not possible, and now the road is farther away.
⟨Character 1⟩: Now I’m even more late. Maybe I should find a smaller path. A path for a slow little turtle.
Just then, she hears a tiny sigh. Near the root’s bumpy bark, a small snail with a curly shell is moving in a shaky circle.
⟨Character 1⟩: Hello, little snail. Why the sigh? Are you lost?
Parsnip: I’m Parsnip. I wanted to see the parade too. I am slower than a sleepy pebble. I’m afraid I’ll never get there.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m as slow as you. But maybe we can help each other. Are you thirsty? Let me find a leaf for you.
⟨Character 1⟩ carefully cups a big green leaf, fills it with a drop of dew, and holds it out. Parsnip drinks, then lifts his little head and looks at the root beside them.
Parsnip: You are kind. And I know a trick. See this hollow side of the root? It’s a secret shortcut, just big enough for small ones like us. It leads right to the showcup garden.
⟨Character 1⟩: Oh, Parsnip, that’s perfect! But can you make it? It’s still a long wiggly way.
Parsnip: I’ll try. But my foot is too soft and the wood is rough.
⟨Character 1⟩: Then I’ll carry you. Climb onto my back and hold on tight. We’ll be a slow-march team.
Parsnip slides carefully onto ⟨Character 1⟩’s shell. ⟨Character 1⟩ tucks her umbrella under one arm like a bright banner, and the two of them start into the hollow root, where the air is cool and smells like old wood.
Parsnip: ⟨Character 1⟩, your shell is nice and smooth. It feels like a warm round stone. I can’t see your face but I know you’re smiling.
⟨Character 1⟩: I am, Parsnip. Friends who are slow together are never really lost. Let’s go find the parade.
Chapter 2: The Good Little Root
Inside the hollow root it is cool and dim, and the air smells like old wood and wet pebbles. ⟨Character 1⟩ walks slowly, humming, carrying Parsnip on her back, the umbrella held high like a bright red and yellow banner.
⟨Character 1⟩: Parsnip, why does this tunnel smell like morning toast? I thought roots smelled like dirt and sleepy beetles.
Parsnip: That smell is a glowing mushroom! It grows in the dark and makes the air warm and delicious. I always think it smells like toast because it reminds me of a cozy breakfast.
⟨Character 1⟩: A glowing mushroom? Can we rest by it for a minute? I want to see the light. That would be a good snack place for someone small and slow like me.
They stop by a little mushroom that pulses with gentle green light. Its cap is soft and it leans against the root wall. ⟨Character 1⟩ and Parsnip settle down for a rest.
Parsnip: ⟨Character 1⟩, why do you love parades so much? I have never seen one. I am afraid I will be too slow and just be let down.
⟨Character 1⟩: Parades are when everyone comes out and marches together. They twirl and wave and the music bounces. I love the feeling of being part of something big and bright, even if I am small. But being slow is okay, Parsnip. We can watch, and we can also be our own parade.
⟨Character 1⟩: Look, I can do a slow step and a twirl with my umbrella, like this. Left, pause, right, twirl. Everyone counts, and the umbrella claps. It is a parade just for us.
Parsnip: My shell feels like a lumpy cake, but I can wiggle in time. Maybe my shell will be my banner, all striped and spiraled. Slow-step, wiggle, pause.
They reach the end of the root and step out onto a ledge. Below them, the showcup garden is full of colorful flags, swaying flowers, and many small creatures marching to bouncy music. It is the big parade!
⟨Character 1⟩: Oh, ⟨Character 1⟩! Look at them all! The ladybug is leading, and the ants carry petals. That is too lovely for such little feet. I could never march with them. They are so fast and so many.
Parsnip: The crowd is too big. I am only a tiny snail. I think I should stay here.
⟨Character 1⟩: We don’t have to join them. We can make a slow parade right here. Round and round that dandelion, just the two of us. Would you like that, Parsnip? A teeny tiny parade with a turtle and a snail?
Parsnip: Yes! But we need some noise and something to wave. I can use this curled leaf as a little horn. Hoot, hoot! And you can wave your umbrella, ⟨Character 1⟩.
⟨Character 1⟩ finds two sunflower seed caps. She puts one on her head like a tiny hat, and the other sits on Parsnip’s shell. Then she picks a long strip of dry leaf and ties it to a twig. Shake, shake, shake! It sounds like a happy rattle.
⟨Character 1⟩: We are a one-turtle-one-snail band! Let’s march slow-step, slow-step, twirl, and hoot, and shake. Ready, Parsnip? Here we go, round and round the dandelion.
Parsnip: My shell is a lumpy cake, but I am dancing like a wiggly noodle. Hoot hoot! This is the best parade I could imagine.
The two march slowly around the bright dandelion, and the real parade bursts into happy music and cheers. As they twirl, dusk creeps across the garden, and the first firefly babies appear, their lanterns blinking in the tall grass.
⟨Character 1⟩: ⟨Character 1⟩, look, lights! Oh, they are fireflies. They are tiny stars coming down to visit us. But the real parade is ending. All the fast creatures are going home.
Parsnip: That’s all right, ⟨Character 1⟩. Our parade has more twirls per step. And my hoppy music is still going. Hoot, hoot.
A little firefly drifts over and lands on the tip of ⟨Character 1⟩’s umbrella. Its glow is warm and soft, like a tiny campfire. ⟨Character 1⟩ and Parsnip look at each other and smile. The glow makes the dandelion seed on ⟨Character 1⟩’s sleeve sparkle like an ember from the little light.
⟨Character 1⟩: The firefly has given us an ember. But not a hot one. It’s a warm little light that says, “Your slow parade matters too.” Parsnip, thank you for finding me and letting me help you. A small kindness is never wasted.
Parsnip: And you found me when I was stuck in my worry circle. Now I want to march with you forever. Slow-step, wiggle, and twirl.
They both grow sleepy. Back at the big oak root, they share one big oak leaf blanket. The firefly duo, including their little friend, glows above them like tiny nightlights. The garden settles into a quiet hush.
⟨Character 1⟩: Tomorrow, and whenever we are too slow for the big parade, we will gather a glowing, slow-wavy hello of hats and steps for anyone who feels too small. That will be our own parade. No one left behind, not even a sleepy snail or a wobbly turtle.
Parsnip: Good night, ⟨Character 1⟩. Every slow step felt like a friend. Even a lumpy cake shell can twinkle in the ember light. Hoot hoot...
⟨Character 1⟩: Good night, Parsnip. We found each other, and now the night is kind. Sweet dreams, little snail.
All the creatures in the garden settle safely into their nooks and leaves. The fireflies blink slower and slower. ⟨Character 1⟩ and Parsnip fall asleep side by side, their tiny parade hats on, their hearts full.
Sleep well, ⟨Character 1⟩ and Parsnip. Ladybug, rest too. Goodnight.
A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩ and Parsnip found each other while searching for the parade. After they meet, what makes ⟨Character 1⟩ feel firefly-happy, and how can a tiny bit of kindness make room for someone new in your corner?
