A Leaf on a Slow Green River
3 chapters for 3 characters · about 3 minutes · told 0 times. A slow river under giant leaves, with a sloth who takes all night to say hello. The highlighted parts are filled in with your own characters when you make this story yours.
Chapter 1: When the Lamps Went Low
The day had been long, and now it was folding itself up like a blanket. In ⟨home⟩, the lamps were low, and ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and ⟨Character 3⟩ were listening to the house settle.
There was ⟨Character 1⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They yawned a yawn so wide that it seemed to pull the whole room a little closer to bedtime.
And there was ⟨Character 2⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They were the first to notice that something outside was glowing.
And there was ⟨Character 3⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They were ready for a story too.
Something at the window was glowing: glow-worms strung through the branches like fairy lights. And with it drifted warm rain dripping from leaf to leaf, patient as a lullaby.
"We'll be back before anyone notices," said ⟨Character 3⟩, which is what everyone says at the start of a very gentle adventure. The room smelled of wet moss and ripe mango.
Chapter 2: The Littlest Traveller
Not everything in the Emerald Canopy was asleep. From just off the path came a tiny, anxious sound, like a question nobody had answered.
They found a tiny tree frog curled up small. It had hopped onto the wrong branch and could not find its singing circle. "That sounds hard," said ⟨Character 1⟩ gently. "Let's look together."
⟨Character 2⟩ knew exactly what to do, because they love ⟨favourite thing⟩, and people who love things are good at noticing. They pointed to a glimmer that nobody else had seen.
It did not take long. Around a bend, under glow-worms strung through the branches like fairy lights, they found the place a tiny tree frog had been looking for. "Thank you," it said, and it meant it twice.
Ondo watched the little family settle. "Well done," it said to ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and ⟨Character 3⟩. Nobody felt proud, exactly. They felt warm, which is better.
Chapter 3: Back to the Pillow
"It is time," said Ondo, in a voice soft and stretched out, like honey poured from a jar. Nobody minded. The best part of going somewhere is the part where you come home sleepy.
⟨Character 3⟩ leaned against the side and watched glow-worms strung through the branches like fairy lights grow small. Their breathing slowed. In, and out. In, and out.
⟨Character 2⟩ was already asleep, one hand still holding the edge of the blanket. ⟨Character 1⟩ tucked it in a little closer, the way you do.
Home again. The blankets were warm, the lamp was off, and outside warm rain dripping from leaf to leaf went on, very softly, as if to say: you can sleep now. I will keep watch.
The rain dripped from leaf to leaf, drip, and drip, and drip. And ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and ⟨Character 3⟩ slept. And slept. And slept. Goodnight.
Somewhere, Ondo is already asleep. So is the moon. So, very nearly, are you.
A question for tonight
Which sound from tonight was the softest: warm rain dripping from leaf to leaf, or your own breathing?
