Chapter 1: The Evening Hush

The day had been long, and now it was folding itself up like a blanket. In ⟨home⟩, the lamps were low, and ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and ⟨Character 3⟩ were listening to the house settle.

There was ⟨Character 1⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They yawned a yawn so wide that it seemed to pull the whole room a little closer to bedtime.

There was also ⟨Character 2⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They said, very softly, "Can you hear that?"

And there was ⟨Character 3⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They were ready for a story too.

At the window there was the slow glitter of a thousand small suns, and under it, so faint you could mistake it for your own breathing, came the hum of planets turning.

"We'll be back before anyone notices," said ⟨Character 3⟩, which is what everyone says at the start of a very gentle adventure. The room smelled of cold clean air and clean sheets.

Chapter 2: The Way to the Quiet Between the Stars

And so a bed that lifted gently off the floor and sailed out of the window. ⟨Character 1⟩ went first, and the others followed, tucking blankets around their knees.

The journey was smooth and very slow. Below them passed a cloud shaped like a sleeping cat, and above them a planet wrapped in ribbons of light, and nobody felt the need to say anything at all.

At the gate of the Quiet Between the Stars stood Lune, a small patient comet. When Lune spoke, the voice was clear and far away, like a bell in another valley. "Welcome," it said. "We have all night."

"Are we far from home?" asked ⟨Character 2⟩. Lune shook its head. "You are never far from home when you are this sleepy. Home comes with you."

⟨Character 3⟩ walked a little behind, counting the lights. They lost count at eleven, which is a very good number to lose count at.

Chapter 3: A Small Kindness

Not everything in the Quiet Between the Stars was asleep. From just off the path came a tiny, anxious sound, like a question nobody had answered.

It was a young star. It had forgotten how to shine and was worried the sky would not notice. ⟨Character 1⟩ knelt down so as not to seem too tall, and said, "Hello. We can help, if you like."

⟨Character 2⟩ knew exactly what to do, because they love ⟨favourite thing⟩, and people who love things are good at noticing. They pointed to a glimmer that nobody else had seen.

It did not take long. Around a bend, under the slow glitter of a thousand small suns, they found the place a young star had been looking for. "Thank you," it said, and it meant it twice.

"You see," said Lune, "the night is not for being brave. It is for being gentle." ⟨Character 3⟩ yawned, and the yawn seemed to agree.

Chapter 4: The Quiet Gift

"Here," said Lune, and nothing more. They had reached the place that the Quiet Between the Stars keeps for the end of the night.

There, resting on nothing in particular, was a pebble of fallen starlight that fit in one hand. ⟨Character 1⟩ reached out and held it. It was warm, and it was heavy in the way that good sleep is heavy.

"What does it do?" asked ⟨Character 2⟩. "It does what you are doing," said Lune. "It rests. Here is a secret: even stars rest, and the dark is only the sky closing its eyes." ⟨Character 2⟩ held the words like a stone in a pocket.

The light around them dimmed to the gentlest glow. The planets turned slowly, slowly, each in its own time. It was, ⟨Character 3⟩ thought, exactly the right amount of everything.

Chapter 5: The Long Way Home

When it was time to go, Lune did not say goodbye. "Goodnight," it said instead, which is a softer word, and the right one.

⟨Character 1⟩ closed their eyes, just to see what it felt like. It felt like cold clean air and clean sheets, and like floating, and like being exactly where they should be.

⟨Character 3⟩ was already asleep, one hand still holding the edge of the blanket. ⟨Character 2⟩ tucked it in a little closer, the way you do.

Home again. The blankets were warm, the lamp was off, and outside the hum of planets turning went on, very softly, as if to say: you can sleep now. I will keep watch.

Somewhere far away, Lune smiled and settled down to sleep as well. The planets turned slowly, slowly, each in its own time. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and ⟨Character 3⟩. Goodnight.

Somewhere, Lune is already asleep. So is the moon. So, very nearly, are you.

A question for tonight
If you could keep one thing from the Quiet Between the Stars under your pillow tonight, what would it be?
