Chapter 1: The Storm and the Umbrella

Rain taps on the street like tiny fingers as Aanya and Rohan walk home from school. The sky is grey and heavy.

⟨Character 1⟩: Rohan, can we walk faster? The sky looks like it’s going to burst.

⟨Character 2⟩: Burst? Like a giant water balloon? That would be epic! But don’t worry, I’ll protect you.

A low rumble rolls across the clouds. Aanya flinches and covers her ears.

⟨Character 1⟩: I don’t like that sound. It’s too loud and grumbly.

⟨Character 2⟩: GRRRR! I am the thunder monster! Rawr!

⟨Character 1⟩: That’s not funny, Rohan. It’s scary.

They hurry up the steps to their flat. Inside, the kitchen smells of ginger and warm milk. Kamala is singing a soft Tamil song while stirring a pot.

⟨Character 3⟩: Ponnu, ponnu, ponnu… come in, come in! The rain is chasing you both.

⟨Character 4⟩, the scruffy beagle, howls at the doorbell like he always does, his tail wagging.

⟨Character 2⟩: ⟨Character 4⟩! Quiet, boy! It’s just us. And guess what? I’m starving. Got any snacks, Paati?

⟨Character 3⟩: There are some murukku in the tin. But first, take off your wet shoes. And Aanya, kanna, why are you shaking? Come here.

⟨Character 1⟩: Thunder is too loud, Paati. It makes my tummy feel funny.

⟨Character 3⟩: Ah, thunder. It’s just a big sound, like a drum in the sky. Maybe one day you can go and see it, and it won’t seem so scary.

⟨Character 2⟩: Yeah, Aanya! You could build a rocket and fly right up to it. Then you could tell it to be quiet!

⟨Character 1⟩: A rocket? Could I really?

Aanya looks out the window. In the trash bin below, an old umbrella with bent spokes sticks out. She gets an idea.

⟨Character 1⟩: Paati, can I have that broken umbrella? The one in the trash?

⟨Character 3⟩: That old thing? It’s broken, but if you want it, you can have it. Just be careful of the sharp bits.

Aanya smiles. She has a plan. But first, the thunder rumbles again, and she hides under a blanket, ⟨Character 4⟩ curling up beside her.

Chapter 2: Building the Rocket

The next afternoon, Rohan’s room is a sea of cardboard tubes, tape, and empty jars. His cricket bat lies forgotten under the bed. Aanya kneels on the floor, drawing a careful plan on a big sheet of paper.

⟨Character 1⟩: See, the umbrella is the body. We open it upside down, and the bent spokes hold the jars. Then we tape the cardboard tubes around it for the engine, and the jar lights glow.

⟨Character 2⟩: But how will it go up? You need a good throw. Let me bowl it like a cricket ball. Wait, maybe we can use my bat to whack it into the sky!

⟨Character 1⟩: No, Rohan. It has to fly on its own. The jars hold the light, and the tapes hold everything. It’s my design.

⟨Character 2⟩: Okay, okay. Boss. I’ll tape. But if it wobbles, you can’t blame me.

Rohan reaches for a jar, but his elbow knocks it over. It rolls off the table and lands with a clatter. Aanya jumps, then sighs.

⟨Character 1⟩: Rohan! That was the biggest jar. We need it.

⟨Character 2⟩: Sorry, sorry! It’s not broken. See? Just a little dent. I’ll tape it extra.

That night, on the flat rooftop, the rocket stands tall. The umbrella is open wide, cardboard tubes zigzag around it, and jars are taped to the spokes. Aanya climbs in and pulls a lever. The rocket wobbles. Then it stops.

⟨Character 1⟩: It didn’t go up. Not even a little.

⟨Character 2⟩: Hey. It shook. That means it wants to fly. We just need more jar lights. More glow, more push. Trust me.

Kamala comes up the stairs, carrying a plate of snacks and a screwdriver. ⟨Character 4⟩ follows, sniffing the air.

⟨Character 3⟩: I brought murukku and a screwdriver. I thought you might need it. Now, where did I put my glasses? I had them just a minute ago.

⟨Character 1⟩: Paati, they’re on your head.

⟨Character 3⟩: Oh! So they are. Silly me. Now, eat something and try again. The night is still young.

They add four more jars, and Rohan tapes them carefully. Aanya flips the switch, and the rocket glows like a jar of fireflies. She smiles.

Chapter 3: Over Pune

The rocket glows on the rooftop, jars flickering like tiny lanterns. Aanya stands at the open hatch, clutching the rim. The night air smells of rain and wet earth.

⟨Character 2⟩: You don’t have to go if you’re scared. But you built it. And I’ll be right here, watching.

⟨Character 3⟩: Remember, thunder is just a big sound. Go and see. We’ll be waiting with warm milk.

Aanya looks at them, then at ⟨Character 4⟩, who barks once and hides behind Kamala’s legs. She takes a deep breath and climbs in.

⟨Character 1⟩: Okay. Here I go.

With a whoosh, the rocket lifts off. The rooftop shrinks below. Pune spreads out like a sheet of lights, streets winding and rooftops glowing. The wind rushes past Aanya’s ears.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m flying! I’m really flying over Pune!

She follows the rumble of thunder to a high cloud. But it isn’t a big, scary cloud. It’s small and fluffy, like a ball of cotton. It rumbles softly, like a cat purring.

⟨Character 1⟩: Hello, thunder. You’re not so big after all.

She pats the cloud. It purrs, a warm, gentle sound. Aanya laughs, then steers the rocket back home.

The rocket lands gently on the rooftop. Rohan cheers and runs to her. Kamala wraps a shawl around her shoulders.

⟨Character 2⟩: You did it! You flew! What was it like?

⟨Character 1⟩: It was soft. The thunder was just a little cloud, purring like a cat. It wasn’t scary at all.

⟨Character 3⟩: See? I told you. Now, inside, all of you. Warm milk with honey.

Inside, the flat smells of milk and honey. They sit on the couch, cups in hand. Kamala sings an old Tamil lullaby, her voice low and warm. ⟨Character 4⟩ curls up on Rohan’s feet.

⟨Character 2⟩: That was the best rocket ever. Even better than cricket.

⟨Character 1⟩: The thunder purred. It really did.

Kamala hums the lullaby. The rain taps softly outside. Everyone settles down, and soon they are all asleep.

The thunder is just a soft purr, and everyone is safe and warm. Goodnight, Aanya, Rohan, Kamala, and ⟨Character 4⟩.

A question for tonight
What would you do if you met the thunder, Aanya?
