Chapter 1: The Boom and the Umbrella

Aanya sits on the floor of the flat, drawing a rocket with a thundercloud inside it. The sky outside is dark. ⟨Character 4⟩, the scruffy brown beagle, is asleep on the rug.

⟨Character 1⟩: There. The rocket needs more fire. And the cloud needs more angry face. It’s a big angry cloud. It goes BOOM. But I don’t like the boom. I like the drawing part, not the boom part.

⟨Character 2⟩: Hey, Aanya. What are you drawing? A rocket? With a cloud inside? That’s a new one. Usually rockets have fire coming out the back. Yours has a cloud in the middle. Like a pet cloud that got stuck.

⟨Character 1⟩: The thunder lives in the cloud. I drawed it so I can look at it and not be scared. But then the real thunder came and I hid my drawing under the rug.

⟨Character 2⟩: I don’t blame you. That boom was loud. Sounded like a giant drum right over our heads. I don’t like it either, but I don’t tell anyone. Except you. And ⟨Character 4⟩. He’s hiding under the table. Smart dog.

⟨Character 1⟩: ⟨Character 4⟩ doesn’t like the doorbell either. He howls at it. But thunder is worse. It doesn’t stop when you tell it to. It just keeps going. Boom. Boom. And the windows shake.

⟨Character 2⟩: I know what we can do. We can build a rocket. A real one. Not a drawing. Then you can fly up and find the thunder and tell it to be quiet. Or just look at it and see it’s not so scary. Remember that old umbrella? The one with bent spokes? I saw it in the cupboard. It looks like a rocket already.

⟨Character 1⟩: The broken umbrella? With the wobbly handle? I don’t know. It’s just an umbrella. It can’t fly. It’s not a rocket. It’s an umbrella that’s broken. Amma said we should throw it away.

⟨Character 2⟩: Exactly! It’s broken. So we can make it into something else. Come on. I’ll get it. You bring your drawing. We’ll show it to Kamala. She’ll know what to do. She always does.

Rohan pulls out a dusty umbrella with bent spokes and a handle that wobbles. ⟨Character 4⟩ peeks from under the table, his tail thumping once, twice.

⟨Character 3⟩: What’s all this? An umbrella on the floor? And you two look like you’re planning something. I was just in the kitchen, singing that old song about the rain and the mango leaves. Do you want to hear it? It goes like this: ‘Mazhai varum, mazhai varum, maanga leaves are dancing.’

⟨Character 1⟩: Kamala, look! We’re making a rocket out of the broken umbrella. Rohan says we can attach a cardboard cone and fins. But I don’t think it will fly. It’s too old and wobbly.

⟨Character 3⟩: Ah, but a rocket doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be brave. And a little tape and string. Here, take these. I’ll help you tie the string. And you know what? The thunder is just a big drum in the sky. It makes a loud noise, but it can’t hurt you. Maybe you can fly up and hear it close. Up close, it’s not so scary.

⟨Character 2⟩: See? I told you. Now let’s spread it out. We need to make it look like a rocket. Aanya, you draw the fins on this cardboard, and I’ll cut them out. Then we tape them to the spokes. And the cone goes on top. It’ll be the best rocket Pune has ever seen.

⟨Character 1⟩: Okay. I’ll draw the fins. But if it doesn’t fly, we can just pretend. Right? Pretend is okay. But I want it to fly. I want to find the thunder and tell it to be quiet. Maybe it will listen.

They work together, taping and tying. ⟨Character 4⟩ watches from under the table, his ears twitching at every rumble. When the rocket is done, Kamala packs a small bag with water and biscuits.

⟨Character 3⟩: There. It looks like a rocket. A bit wobbly, but brave. Now, we need to go up to the terrace to test it. I’ll bring the bag. You two carry the rocket. ⟨Character 4⟩ can come too, but he must stay close. No howling at the terrace door.

⟨Character 1⟩: Let’s go. I’m ready. I think. The thunder is waiting. I’m going to fly and find it. And I’m not going to hide.

Chapter 2: Over Pune with a Rumble

On the terrace, the wind lifts the edge of the umbrella. Aanya stands beside it with the tape still sticky on her fingers. Rohan checks the string one more time, pulling it tight around the wobbly handle.

⟨Character 1⟩: The spokes are straight now. I fixed the bent one with two layers of tape, and the cone sits on top like a nose. But my hands are shaky. What if I let go and it just falls?

⟨Character 2⟩: It won’t fall. You built it. Look at the fins. You drew them yourself, and I taped them on. Now climb into the basket and look for the biggest cloud. The dark one. That’s where the thunder lives.

⟨Character 3⟩: Go on, kanna. I’ll watch from here. ⟨Character 4⟩ will stay with me. Just remember what I told you: the thunder is a drum. A big drum in the sky. You can go and listen.

Aanya climbs into the basket. It tilts, then settles. The umbrella shivers. Rohan lets out the rope, and the rocket lifts with a whoosh that ruffles ⟨Character 4⟩’s ears.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m flying! I’m actually flying! The rooftops look like little boxes, and the streetlights are turning on one by one. I can see the park! I can see our building!

⟨Character 2⟩: Keep going! Look for the dark cloud! We’re right under you! ⟨Character 4⟩ is barking at the sky!

A gust of wind hits the umbrella and spins it. Aanya grabs the spokes and turns the rocket back the right way. Her knuckles are white. Then she sees it. A fat dark cloud, low over the city.

⟨Character 1⟩: There it is. The dark one. And it’s rumbling. Boom. Boom. My heart is going fast. But I’m going closer. Closer.

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait. That’s it? That’s the thunder? It sounds like a big drum. Just a big drum. Boom, boom, boom. It’s loud, but it’s not chasing me. It’s just up there, being loud. I’m not scared. I’m really not scared!

She turns the rocket and drifts down. The umbrella lands softly on the grass of a park, tipping gently onto its side. Aanya climbs out, her legs wobbly.

⟨Character 2⟩: You did it! You flew right up to the cloud! I saw you steer when the wind spun you. That was the best thing I’ve ever seen. ⟨Character 4⟩ ran the whole way. His tail hasn’t stopped.

⟨Character 1⟩: Up close, it was just a big noise. Like a drum. Not a monster. Not anything with teeth. I listened, and I laughed, and then I flew down. I’m not scared of thunder anymore.

⟨Character 3⟩: You built it, you flew it, and you found your answer. That’s my brave girl. Now let’s walk home before the next rumble. Though I don’t think it will bother you now.

Chapter 3: The Quiet After the Boom

The park is quiet now. Wet grass shines under the streetlights, and the umbrella rocket leans against a bench with its cardboard nose bent a little. Aanya picks it up and holds it over her shoulder like a flag.

⟨Character 2⟩: You built that whole thing on the floor of our flat. Tape, string, cardboard fins. And then you flew it right up to the cloud. I keep thinking about the wind spinning you, and you just grabbed the spokes and turned it straight. I couldn’t do that.

⟨Character 1⟩: I didn’t know I could do that either. I just held on and thought about the drum. Boom, boom. And then I laughed. The laugh came out before I could stop it. I think the thunder didn’t mind.

⟨Character 3⟩: Mazhai varum, mazhai varum. Mango leaves are dancing. The rain came and went, and the drum went quiet. Sleep now, little one, sleep now.

They walk past the shuttered shops. ⟨Character 4⟩ trots beside Rohan, his nose low to the ground. At the building door, Rohan holds it open, and they climb the stairs slowly, one step at a time.

⟨Character 1⟩: My arms are tired from carrying the rocket. But I want to put it by the window. So it can see the sky. So it’s ready for the next time.

⟨Character 2⟩: I’ll get your blanket. You go put the rocket where you want it. Then straight to bed. No arguing. Well. Maybe a little arguing. But not much.

Aanya sets the umbrella rocket by the window. Its bent spokes cast a small shadow on the wall. She climbs into bed and pulls the sheet up to her chin.

⟨Character 3⟩: There. The drum is far away now, and so is the cloud. You went up and you listened, and you came home. That is a big, brave thing. Close your eyes. I’ll sing until you’re asleep.

Rohan sits at the table with his diary open. He writes in small letters, his pen scratching. ⟨Character 4⟩ curls up on Rohan’s feet and lets out a long, slow breath.

⟨Character 2⟩: Today Aanya built a rocket from a broken umbrella. She flew over Pune. She found the thunder. She is not scared anymore. We walked home. Everyone is fine.

Kamala sings the lullaby again, quieter this time. Aanya’s breathing slows. The room settles. The rocket waits by the window, and outside, the sky is calm.

Everyone is safe and home, and the night is calm. Sleep well, ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, ⟨Character 3⟩, and ⟨Character 4⟩.
