Chapter 1: The Dark Window

Inside the dark bedroom, ⟨Character 1⟩, a sleepy puppy, opens his eyes.

⟨Character 1⟩: The moon is not here. I opened my eyes and the window is only black, like the inside of my closed eyes. Last night the moon was round and white and it made a silver path across my blanket, but tonight it has gone away somewhere and I cannot fall asleep without it. I will go outside and search, because maybe it rolled behind a cloud or got stuck on the roof.

⟨Character 1⟩: I need my slippers because the floor is cold. Here is one slipper by the bed, soft and brown, but I cannot find the other one and I am too sleepy to crawl under the bed for it. One slipper is enough for a quick walk to the garden, and I do not like two slippers anyway, they make my paws too hot. I will leave this one behind and pad outside.

⟨Character 1⟩ pads into the garden and sniffs the cool night air.

⟨Character 1⟩: No moon under the rose bush. I pushed my nose into the dirt and smelled only wet leaves, an old worm, and the faint smell of my own paw prints from this morning. The bush is dark and quiet, and there is no round silver light hiding in there. Maybe the moon fell behind the bench or got stuck in the hedge, and it is too dark to see without it, so I will look behind the bench next. I am not giving up yet.

⟨Character 1⟩: I looked behind the bench and found only a dry leaf and a shadow that looked like a sleeping cat. No moon, no silver glow. The garden is very dark tonight, and the moon is not anywhere in it, not by the fence, not by the stone path, not under the lavender. I even peeked at the bird bath, but the water was still and black.

⟨Character 1⟩: The moon is not in the garden. I checked the rose bush and the bench and the soft patch of grass by the fence, and I found nothing but night bugs and the smell of cold stone. I am too sleepy to keep digging, but I will go to the lane and look there. Maybe the moon is resting on the road or floating in a puddle.

⟨Character 1⟩: I will walk to the lane. The lane is long and dark, but the moon might be lying on the ground or floating in a puddle. I will go even though my eyes are heavy and my paws are slow, because a puppy who wants the moon has to keep moving. The lane is just past the gate, and my one slipper will keep my paw warm enough.

⟨Character 1⟩: I left my other slipper by the door, and now my paw is cold. Too sleepy to go back for it, the moon is more important. I will pick it up later, after I find the moon. Now I will head to the lane, one slipper on, one slipper off, and a very sleepy head.

Chapter 2: The Silver Puddle

The lane is quiet under the dark sky. ⟨Character 1⟩ walks slowly, one slipper on and one paw cold. He sniffs the air and listens to the soft night sounds.

⟨Character 1⟩: My paw is cold because I left my slipper by the door, and now the lane feels rough under my bare foot. The lane is very dark and the trees make soft shadows that move when the wind blows, like big sleepy hands. I am very sleepy, but I will keep looking for the moon because I cannot fall asleep without its silver light on my blanket. Maybe the moon rolled down here like a big white ball and got stuck in the gutter, and I will find it and carry it home.

Watchman: Hello, sleepy puppy. I am the watchman with the lantern, and I saw you walking all alone in the dark. Why are you out so late when little puppies should be asleep in a warm bed? Did you lose something, or are you just exploring the night?

⟨Character 1⟩: I am looking for the moon. It is not in my window, it is not in the garden, and I looked behind the bench and under the rose bush but I only found a dry leaf. I cannot sleep without the moon because its silver light makes my room feel safe and soft. So I walked out to the lane to search, even though my eyes are heavy and my paws are slow.

Watchman: Look over there by the fence. A puddle is shining like a little mirror. Maybe the moon is hiding inside it, just waiting for you to look. I have seen the moon reflected in puddles many times, and sometimes it looks so close you could touch it.

⟨Character 1⟩: I look into the puddle and I see a face. It is my own face, round and sleepy, with one ear bent and my whiskers drooping down. That is not the moon, that is just me looking back, and it makes me feel a little bit sad because I thought I had found it. The puddle is shiny like a mirror, but all it shows is a tired puppy who is too awake to sleep.

⟨Character 1⟩: A cloud moves away and the puddle lights up with silver, brighter than the lantern. I see the moon in the water, round and bright, looking just like it does in my window. Then I look up at the sky and there it is behind the clouds, big and white and smiling down at me. You were hiding, not gone, and now you have come back because I was looking for you.

⟨Character 1⟩: There you are. I was looking in the wrong places, down in the dirt and under the bush, but you were up in the sky all along behind a cloud. Oh, my scarf just fell off because I jumped, but I am too sleepy to go back for it now. I will run to the hill to say goodnight to you, and then I will walk home and go to bed.

Chapter 3: The Hill and the Window

The sleepy puppy climbs the small hill, yawning as he goes.

⟨Character 1⟩: My legs are heavy and the grass feels cool on my bare paw. I climb the hill step by step, and the moon is bright above me, so I can see where to put my feet. I am too sleepy to walk straight, but I do not fall down. The hill is not very high, and soon I am at the top.

⟨Character 1⟩: The grass on the top of the hill is soft like a blanket. I lie down and look up at the moon, round and white like my favorite bowl. It is so close I could touch it with my nose. The wind is quiet and it smells like fresh grass and a little bit like my own fur. I feel very small and very peaceful.

⟨Character 1⟩: Goodnight, moon. Thank you for hiding behind the cloud and then coming back to me. I was looking for you in the wrong places, but now I know you are always in the sky. I will go home and sleep now, and you can stay in my window. Goodnight, moon, and I will see you tomorrow.

⟨Character 1⟩: I must walk down the hill and go home. My scarf is lying by the puddle where I dropped it, and my slipper is by the garden door. I will pick them up on the way, because they are my things and I need them for bed. The moon will light my path so I do not trip over a stone or a root. I will collect my scarf first, because it is closer.

⟨Character 1⟩: Here is my scarf, damp from the grass but still soft. And here is my slipper by the door, just where I left it. Now both my paws are warm again, and I am ready for bed. The house is dark but the moon shines through the open door, making a silver path to my room. I walk inside, step by step, very very sleepy.

In the bedroom, moonlight fills the window and falls across the floor.

⟨Character 1⟩: I climb into my bed and pull the blanket up to my chin. The pillow is cool and it smells like my own sleepy smell. The moonlight comes through the window and makes a silver square on my blanket, just like it did last night. I am so sleepy now, but I do not want to close my eyes yet because I like looking at the moon. I will watch it for a little while.

⟨Character 1⟩: The moon stays with me, and the room is full of soft silver light. My eyes are closing, and I cannot keep them open anymore. Goodnight, moon. Goodnight, bed. Goodnight, blanket. I am a sleepy puppy, and now I will sleep all night until the morning comes.

Sleep well, ⟨Character 1⟩. Sleep well, Watchman. Goodnight.

A question for tonight
When you feel sleepy, do you go looking for the moon, or do you let the moon find you?
