Chapter 1: Red at Midnight
The blue quilt lies over ⟨Character 1⟩ like a sleeping animal, and his phone buzzes twice against the nightstand. On the third buzz he grabs it, eyes still closed.
⟨Character 1⟩: Nia? It is midnight and I was dreaming about a warm plate of samosas. If the website has crashed, tell it to wait until morning. If the power is out, light a candle. If this is a wrong number, goodnight.
Operator: ⟨Character 1⟩, the whole grid just went dark after a power cut in the east quarter, and every traffic light on the map lost its timing, so every intersection is blinking nonsense. A lost ambulance is circling the dark intersection on Sister Street, blue lights pulsing and no green to follow. You built the voice traffic system two years ago, and the lights know your voice. I need you to talk to them before the driver has to turn around.
⟨Character 1⟩: I am not a traffic engineer, Nia. I build websites and I eat samosas, and right now the only thing I want to save is my sleep. Those old lights do talk back when I log into the server, yes, but that does not mean I can guide an ambulance through a blackout from my bed. Call the road crew and let them shout at the control boxes instead.
⟨Character 1⟩ shuffles to a desk cluttered with a laptop, two cold samosas on a chipped plate, and a half-built website glowing on the screen. The word Sister Street blinks on the map like a small red heart.
⟨Character 1⟩: Okay, you old boxes of wires. Central server, I need the emergency route for Sister Street. Wake up and tell me which of you are still alive after that power cut. I am eating a cold samosa for courage, so be patient with me.
Traffic Server: Central voice server online. Emergency route database missing after power cut. Awaiting your voice key, ⟨Character 1⟩. All north-side lights are on local red.
Operator: ⟨Character 1⟩, the ambulance has stopped circling and is waiting at the first green on Sister Street. But the roundabout light is stuck red and will not reset from here. The system has flagged your midnight patch as suspicious and locked remote access. You may have to go to that roundabout in person, and it is raining.
⟨Character 1⟩: Locked out? I built that traffic system, not a babysitter. I am not leaving this apartment in my slippers. I will try the old hospital route first.
Chapter 2: The Stubborn Intersection
Rain slides down the dark roundabout lights as ⟨Character 1⟩ stands with soaked pajama cuffs, and the lost ambulance waits at the red, its siren off, its blue and red flashes reflected on the wet asphalt of Sister Street.
⟨Character 1⟩: Come on, old clicker. The service road still has power, so stop sulking and give me a green arrow. You are behaving like my website on a Monday, stuck in a loop and refusing to load. I am standing in the rain in fuzzy slippers, talking to a box of wires, and I will save your turn even if you make me miss my sleep forever.
Ambulance Driver: This is the ambulance on Sister Street, we have a patient, and the roundabout is red in every direction. Should we turn around and find another route? The hospital is only ten blocks away, but we cannot move without a green.
⟨Character 1⟩: Don’t you dare turn around. I will make this light save the turn for you, just give me one minute. This old traffic light is balky, but it remembers my voice from two years ago. I talked it through a thunderstorm once, and it gave me the green wave all the way to the river.
Roundabout Light: Sequence reset accepted. Emergency green arrow on north exit. Proceed with caution. And ⟨Character 1⟩, do not call me balky. I just had a power cut.
After the ambulance rolls through the green arrow, ⟨Character 1⟩ follows the next green lights on foot, walking half a block ahead, until the road darkens at Hospital Row and one overhead light wears a wet coat of ivy.
⟨Character 1⟩: You are the oldest one here, hidden under all this green. Do you remember your emergency voice, old friend? The power cut wiped the server, and I need the hospital protocol you had before the website. Just a low buzz and a green wave for the ambulance behind me.
Hospital Row Light: I remember, ⟨Character 1⟩. I have the old hospital route stored deep, from the days when nurses called me the good green. I will wake now, and I will guide your ambulance to the emergency bay. You sound tired. Walk with me.
⟨Character 1⟩: There you are. My quiet old friend. I knew you would not let me down. Let’s give them a green wave straight to the doors.
Chapter 3: Green Wave to Sleep
The old hospital light gives a long green wave, and the lost ambulance is saved by the talking traffic lights as the rain stops and the wet street shines.
Ambulance Driver: Thank you, ⟨Character 1⟩. You saved our patient. We are at the emergency bay now, and the green wave carried us all the way down Hospital Row without a single red. The paramedics are already opening the back doors, and the nurses are waiting inside. I will not forget what you did tonight.
⟨Character 1⟩: Just follow the wave, and the nurses will take over now. You did the real saving, not me. I only talked to you, and you remembered the old hospital protocol from before the website. The rain has stopped, and my slippers are squeaking with every step, like tiny frogs singing me home. I will leave the front door unlocked so the cool air can follow me in, and tomorrow I will sleep until noon and eat the last samosa. Goodnight, roundabout. Goodnight, hospital row. Goodnight, little crossing light on Sister Street.
Hospital Row Light: Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. We will keep a slow, sleepy blink until dawn. The ambulance is safely inside, and the patient is in good hands. You can go home now, and leave your door unlocked so the cool air can follow you in.
Back in his bedroom, ⟨Character 1⟩ peels off his wet pajamas, leaves them in a heap on the cold floor, and falls into bed with his phone in one hand and the cat nowhere in sight.
⟨Character 1⟩: Last command for tonight, city. Dim to a gentle amber glow, like a nightlight for the whole street. I am too sleepy to say every name again, but you all know how to tick. The server in the next room sounds like your cousin, humming the same low note. So dim, and let the wet pavements dry under a soft orange blink.
Hospital Row Light: Amber glow set. Sleep well, ⟨Character 1⟩. The city will watch over you, and the old hospital light will keep one eye open for the next lost ambulance, just as I did tonight. You are a good friend to every bulb and wire.
⟨Character 1⟩: Goodnight, old friend. I can hear the city tick like a server in the next room, and my wet slippers are in a heap by the door. Sleep...
Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩, Operator, Traffic Server, Ambulance Driver, Roundabout Light, and Hospital Row Light. Sleep well, all of you.
A question for tonight
If you could talk to one object in your neighbourhood tonight, what would you ask it to do?
