Chapter 1: The Moonlit Shallows

The small wooden boat drifted into a sea that glowed silver under the moon. A path of light stretched across the water, and the waves folded onto a sandbar with a soft hush.

⟨Character 1⟩: Grandma, the water is shining. It looks like a big silver path. But it’s dark out there. I don’t want to go too far.

⟨Character 3⟩: Don’t worry, kanna. The moon is just showing off. See how the light dances? It’s like a trail of stars on the sea. We’ll stay close.

⟨Character 2⟩: This is brilliant! I’m writing it all down. The boat is bobbing, the water is glowing, and ⟨Character 4⟩ is snoring on my feet. Diary entry number forty-two.

⟨Character 4⟩: Snore. Snuffle.

A silver shape surfaced beside the boat. It was Marlo, an old turtle with a shell like a cracked dinner plate.

Marlo: Good evening, travellers. I am Marlo. I keep the shallows tidy. You’ve come at a good time. The whale is humming the tide to sleep, but the hum is fading.

⟨Character 1⟩: Whale? Is it big? Will it splash us?

⟨Character 2⟩: A whale! I’ve never seen one. Can we see it? Where is it?

⟨Character 3⟩: Rohan, sit down. You’ll tip us over. Marlo, why is the hum fading?

Marlo: Because a piece of the map is missing. The map shows the way to the whale’s cove. Without it, the whale cannot find the deep channel, and the tide will go quiet. Look here on my shell.

On Marlo’s shell was a faint pattern of lines and circles. One piece, shaped like a star, was blank.

⟨Character 1⟩: There’s a hole in the map. Like a puzzle piece is gone.

⟨Character 3⟩: Oh dear. Where did I put my glasses? I can’t see the map without them.

⟨Character 2⟩: Grandma, they’re on your head. You pushed them up when you were singing.

⟨Character 3⟩: So they are. Thank you, kanna. Now, Marlo, we must find that missing piece. The whale needs its lullaby.

Marlo: Will you help? The piece was last seen near the coral gardens. But be careful. The shallows are full of sleepy creatures.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’ll help. But I’m staying close to Grandma.

⟨Character 2⟩: And I’ll write everything down. This is going to be the best diary entry ever.

Chapter 2: The Sleeping Seahorses

The boat slid up to the coral gardens. Pink and green branches swayed under the water, and the air smelled of salt and warm seaweed. Three seahorses floated among the coral, their tails curled around the stems.

⟨Character 1⟩: They’re trying to sleep. But one of them keeps giggling. Look, his little tail is wiggling.

⟨Character 2⟩: Hello! Sorry to wake you. We’re looking for a missing map piece. Have you seen it?

seahorse: Ooh, a map piece! We saw something shiny. But I can’t remember where. It was near the glowing cave. Hee hee.

seahorse: The cave with the lantern jellyfish. We meant to go there, but we got sleepy. Then we started laughing at a joke. What was the joke?

seahorse: I don’t remember. But the cave is that way. Past the big rock that looks like a loaf of bread. Hee hee. Sorry.

⟨Character 1⟩: Which way is the loaf of bread rock? I can’t see it from here. Is it near the tallest coral?

seahorse: That way. You’re a brave little one to ask. Most visitors just float about. Now off you go. We need to try to sleep again.

⟨Character 3⟩: Goodnight, seahorses. Sleep well. Come on, Aanya. You found the way!

The family followed the rock shaped like a loaf of bread until they reached a cave glowing with soft blue light. Inside, a lantern jellyfish pulsed gently, like a slow heartbeat.

⟨Character 2⟩: Look! The jellyfish is lighting up the whole cave. And there’s a star-shaped sea glass piece on that rock. That’s the missing piece!

⟨Character 1⟩: Careful, Rohan! It’s slippery.

Rohan reached for the piece. But his elbow caught a wet stone, and with a small plop, the piece fell into a deep pool at the cave’s edge.

⟨Character 2⟩: I dropped it. I’m sorry. I was too fast. The water looks so dark down there.

⟨Character 3⟩: It’s all right. We’ll get it. Aanya, you’re a good swimmer. But only if you want to.

⟨Character 1⟩: I can do it. I don’t like dark water. But the jellyfish is lighting it up. I’ll dive.

Aanya slid into the pool. The water was cool and clear. The star-shaped piece glittered on a rock shelf. She grabbed it and swam back up, dripping and grinning.

⟨Character 2⟩: You did it! I’m writing this down. Aanya dived into the dark pool and saved the map piece. Hero of the shallows.

⟨Character 1⟩: It fits! The star shape matches the hole in Marlo’s map. Now we can find the whale.

Chapter 3: The Whale’s Lullaby

The boat moved into deep water. The map on Marlo’s shell was whole again, and every line pointed forward. Aanya sat at the front, holding the map tight. The path of moonlight spread ahead of them like a silver road.

⟨Character 1⟩: The map says we go past the three tall rocks, then the water gets smooth. The whale is right there. I’ll lead the way.

⟨Character 2⟩: Look at her. Last night she was hiding behind Grandma. Now she’s the captain. Should I write down that she’s the captain?

⟨Character 3⟩: Write it down, kanna. She’s worked hard for it. Are you all right, Aanya? You’re very quiet.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m fine. I’m just listening. The water is humming. Can you hear it?

A low hum rose from the deep. It was soft, like a bass string plucked very far away. The water shivered. The rocks passed by, and the sea grew still.

⟨Character 2⟩: There. Look. The whale is rising.

A huge grey back broke the surface. The whale was as long as three boats. Its eye was gentle. Its hum filled the air, warm and slow, and the moonlight seemed to rock with it.

⟨Character 1⟩: Hello, whale. You were lost. We brought your map back. Now you can hum the tide to sleep.

Marlo: It’s working. Look at the sea. It’s going quiet. Thank you, Aanya. Thank you all. I’ll keep watch.

⟨Character 3⟩: Goodnight, Marlo. And goodnight, whale.

The whale hummed lower and lower. The family wrapped themselves in a blanket. ⟨Character 4⟩ curled up on Rohan’s feet and snored.

⟨Character 3⟩: Kaalai nila, kaalai nila. Silver moon, silver moon. Rock the water gently. Rock my children too. Kamala hums an old Tamil song

Kaalai nila means silver moon.

⟨Character 3⟩: as she finds her glasses in her hair.

⟨Character 2⟩: Diary entry forty-three. Aanya led us home. She dived into a dark pool and held up the map. I think she’s the bravest person I know. P.S. Grandma found her glasses in her hair again.

⟨Character 1⟩: The whale is still humming. I can hear it. It sounds like the moon looks.

Aanya took off her shoes and stood carefully beside the rail. The dark water for today was silver and calm. She took up the map and began to draw a picture of the whale on the back: one big back, two splashes, and the silver path of moonlight. A line caught her eye on the map, a small star. She kept it in her lap and curled up beside Kamala. The whale hummed. The boat rocked, slowly. And every wave folded onto the sand with a hush of sleep.

The story is finished, and everyone is safe and warm. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 3⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 4⟩. Goodnight, Marlo. Goodnight, seahorse.

A question for tonight
