Chapter 1: A Wish on the Water

Rain taps the window of a ⟨home⟩. Aanya sits up in bed, hugging her knees.

⟨Character 1⟩: Not again. That rumble is too big. It rolls right under the floor. I wish a big sound would sing me to sleep instead of making me hide. A big, warm sound. Like a whale, maybe. Do whales sing? I think they do. I saw a picture once, a whale with its mouth open like it was singing. I want that. I want a song that is bigger than thunder and soft at the same time. I want to fall asleep to it and not be scared.

⟨Character 2⟩: Who are you whispering to? The moon? Because whales don’t live in Pune, you know. They live in the ocean, far away. But I’d like to see one too. A big blue one, bigger than our building. I bet it could hum louder than any thunder. Hey, ⟨Character 4⟩, get back here, you scruffy thing. You’re supposed to be asleep on my feet, not sniffing Aanya’s slippers.

⟨Character 4⟩: Woof. Woof woof. Sniff sniff. Woof.

⟨Character 3⟩: What is all this noise? I was humming that old song, the one about the moon and the boat. Aa… aa… something, something… oh, I’ve lost the words again. Never mind. The tune is still here, somewhere in my chest. Aanya, your eyes are wide as saucers. Thunder again? Come here, let me tuck that blanket. Rohan, don’t tease your sister. ⟨Character 4⟩, sit. Good dog.

A beam of moonlight on the floor widens into a path of silver water, and the family steps onto the ocean.

⟨Character 1⟩: Look! The floor is water now. It’s warm. It holds my feet like a hand. And something is glowing. A jellyfish, all lit up like a lantern. Hello? Are you the one who sings?

⟨Character 2⟩: Whoa. This is better than any cricket match. The water is solid but soft. And that jellyfish is floating right in front of us. I think it wants us to follow. Come on, ⟨Character 4⟩. Stay close to my ankle. Good boy.

⟨Character 3⟩: Oh my. I’ve never seen the sea so calm. It’s like a sheet of blue-green glass. The jellyfish is blinking at us. Two blinks, then a long glow. It’s trying to say something.

Lantern Jellyfish: Greetings, little ones. I am a lantern jellyfish. I light the way for those who need a lullaby. I know where the whale sings. Would you like me to show you?

Chapter 2: The Crab and the Silver Bell

The moonlit path narrows to a sandy patch, where a small crab walks in a shell far too big for it. Clink. Clink. Clink.

Crab: Oh, hello there. Mind the shell. It’s a bit roomy, I know. But I like the echo inside. When I walk, it goes clink, clink, clink, like a tiny drum. And when I sleep, my own footsteps rock me. Don’t laugh, it’s true. I found something shiny in it this morning too. Here, look.

⟨Character 4⟩: Sniff. Sniff sniff. Woof. Woof woof. Sniff. Woof. Sniff sniff woof.

⟨Character 1⟩: There! Something is caught in the curl of it. A little silver bell. It’s tiny as my thumbnail. Does it make a sound? Can I hold it? Oh, wait. Wait. You said soft thunder? No. I don’t want it. Thunder is the worst sound. It chases me under the blanket every single time. Even a little bit of thunder would make my heart go fast.

Lantern Jellyfish: This bell was made from a soft thundercloud, little one. Not the loud kind. The kind that rolls far away and sounds like a purr. One ring, and you will hear it. One small ring.

⟨Character 2⟩: I’ll do it. I’m not scared of thunder. I’ll ring the bell if it helps. Aanya, you don’t have to. I can…

⟨Character 3⟩: No, Rohan. No fixing. No stepping in. Some things a child has to do herself. Look at her face. She’s not crying. She’s thinking. That is a fine face for bravery. Aanya, we are right here. Hmm. All right, the tune. I’ll hum it. That will help.

Aanya takes a breath and rings the bell. It sounds like a gentle roll of thunder, soft as a sleepy cat.

⟨Character 1⟩: Oh. It’s… it really is soft. It’s like a purr. My heart isn’t going fast at all. Wait, it’s buzzing in my hand. It’s not scary. It’s warm. Can I ring it again? One more, please. Granny, do you hear it? It doesn’t chase me anywhere. It just says, hello, it’s only me, friend.

Crab: She rang it. Well done, little one. I’ll stay here and listen, shell and all.

Whale: Welcome, small singers. You rang a soft thunder. I felt it in my water, and it did not rattle me. It felt like company. Come nearer, Little Ring. I have a song to share. Not yet. Slow now. The old ones call me the whale that hums the tide to sleep. Let it hum for you.

Chapter 3: The Whale's Lullaby

The whale lowers its broad back to the water, and the family climbs on. The skin is warm and soft as a worn quilt.

⟨Character 3⟩: Up here the stars look close enough to touch. Let me try that song again. The moon, the boat, the sleepy tide… no. The words are gone again. But the tune stays. Mm mm, mm mm. I don’t need the words. I can feel the tune in my chest like a warm stone. Whale, can you hear it? Hum with me.

Whale: I hear you, old singer. Mm mm, mm mm. I will take your tune and make it low and wide. Little Ring, ring your silver bell. Soft thunder and a ⟨role⟩’s tune. That is a good song. That is the best song.

⟨Character 1⟩: It’s like a big friendly purr. The bell and the hum and Granny’s tune all mixed up. My arms are heavy. My eyes keep shutting. That rumble used to make me hide under the blanket. Now it feels like a hand rocking me.

⟨Character 2⟩: This is better than any cricket match. And I love cricket. Don’t tell anyone I said that. My feet are warm, and ⟨Character 4⟩ is already snoring on them. Granny, you remembered the song after all. Just not the words.

⟨Character 4⟩ curls into a warm ball on Rohan’s feet, sighs once, and sleeps. The jellyfish dims its glow to a soft ember.

Lantern Jellyfish: Sleep now. The tide will carry you home on a ribbon of moonlight. The bell will stay with you, Little Ring. Ring it when you need a small, kind thunder.

The whale’s song fades into the hush of waves folding onto sand, and the moonbeam path carries them back to a ⟨home⟩.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m sleepy, Granny. The hum is still in my ears. It’s going away slow, like a train leaving a station. Don’t stop humming. Please.

⟨Character 3⟩: Mm mm, mm mm. Sleepy tide. Sleepy… mm.

Rain taps the window. A thin ribbon of moonlight lies across the sill, and the little silver bell sits beside it, quiet. Aanya’s eyes close. Rohan snores lightly. ⟨Character 4⟩ sleeps on his feet, and no one is afraid of any sound at all.

The story is finished, and everyone is safe and warm. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 3⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 4⟩. Goodnight, Lantern Jellyfish. Goodnight, Crab. Goodnight, Whale.

A question for tonight
What sound would you like to hear that makes you feel safe and sleepy?
