Chapter 1: The Sea at the Door
The sea had crept up to the bottom step of the flat, quiet and silver under the full moon. Aanya and Rohan stood side by side, barefoot on the warm stone. ⟨Character 4⟩ sniffed the water and sneezed.
⟨Character 1⟩: It’s right at our door. I’ve never seen it come this close. It’s like the whole ocean came to visit us.
⟨Character 2⟩: And it’s not even cold. Feel it. It’s like warm soup. I bet I can skip a stone all the way to that stripe of moonlight.
⟨Character 1⟩: Don’t go too far. The water looks deep. I’m drawing it first, so I remember.
⟨Character 2⟩: You always draw first. Fine, I’ll wait. One, two, three skips! See? Easy.
Kamala came out holding a shawl and a chipped teacup. She stopped and looked at the water.
⟨Character 3⟩: Oh my. The sea at our door. I was just singing something, and now I can’t remember the rest. Strange how the moon pulls the water and the songs right out of my head.
⟨Character 1⟩: Sing it again, Paati. The part you remember. Please?
⟨Character 3⟩: Just a few notes. La la la, la la. That’s all I have left. I used to know the whole thing, but now it’s like a shell you hold to your ear and the sea is too far away.
⟨Character 2⟩: Look! That light out there. It’s coming closer. Is it a jellyfish? It’s glowing like a lantern.
A lantern jellyfish floated near the steps, pulsing a soft blue-green glow. It lit a path of moonlight across the water.
⟨Character 2⟩: We should follow it. It’s showing us the way. Come on, ⟨Character 4⟩!
⟨Character 1⟩: Wait. What if it’s too far? I should draw it first, so I’m not scared. There. Now it’s in my book. It looks smaller there.
⟨Character 3⟩: The song might be out there. The whole lullaby. I can feel it, like a hook in my chest. If we follow the light, maybe I’ll remember.
⟨Character 1⟩: Okay. But you hold my hand, Rohan. Not too tight.
⟨Character 2⟩: Deal. ⟨Character 4⟩, stay close. Let’s go see what the moon is singing about.
Chapter 2: The Giant Clam and the Lantern Jellyfish
The family waded through warm, knee-deep water. A giant clam shell rocked gently beside them, open and lined with soft moss, big enough for all four of them.
⟨Character 3⟩: I’ll go first, since I’m the oldest and the moss looks soft. Give me your hand, Aanya. There we go. Now Rohan. Mind your knees. And ⟨Character 4⟩, up you come, good boy.
⟨Character 1⟩: It’s like a boat made of a shell. A shell boat! ⟨Character 4⟩ is already curled up. He’s snoring.
⟨Character 2⟩: Then let’s go. Follow that jellyfish. Faster, shell! Come on!
The clam glided forward across the silver water. Ahead, the lantern jellyfish floated bright, brighter than before, and Aanya hid her eyes behind her hands.
⟨Character 1⟩: Too bright. Rohan, it’s too bright. It’s like looking at the sun.
⟨Character 2⟩: Hey! Jellyfish! Dim your light! We can’t see! Dim it right now!
The jellyfish did not dim. It pulsed even brighter, lighting the water white.
⟨Character 3⟩: Rohan, love, try asking instead of telling. Some lights listen better to a soft voice.
⟨Character 2⟩: Excuse me, jellyfish. Your light is lovely, but it’s a bit too bright for our eyes. Would you please glow softer, just a little?
The jellyfish dimmed at once to a soft blue-green glow, like a lantern with a scarf over it.
⟨Character 3⟩: It listened. I knew it would. And look at Aanya. She’s already drawing it.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m making it a soft glow in my book. So I can look at it later. And look over there. Three little seahorses. They’re asleep.
Three seahorses floated asleep, their tails tangled in a ribbon of seaweed. Rohan reached out and gently untangled them, one by one.
First Seahorse: Oh, thank you. We’ve been stuck here for ages. Here’s your way: past the crab with the heavy shell, where the whale hums deep and well.
Second Seahorse: Heavy shell, heavy shell, that’s the crab who has a tale to tell. Follow the moon path, don’t lose the light. Goodnight.
Third Seahorse: Goodnight. And thank you, big brother. You have kind hands.
⟨Character 3⟩: Past the crab with the heavy shell. I’ll remember that. I’ll try to.
⟨Character 2⟩: I got them loose. Did you see? I was careful. Now, clam, sail on! That way!
The clam glided on, rocking gently, and ⟨Character 4⟩ slept in the moss.
Chapter 3: The Crab’s Big Shell
The clam stopped beside a huge shell that blocked the narrow channel. Inside it, a small crab was stuck, feet waving. The whale’s hum was faint and muffled.
⟨Character 2⟩: It won’t budge. I’m pushing as hard as I can, and it’s like a wall. Crab, can you hear me? We’re going to get you out.
Crab: I’ve been stuck for days. My shell grew too big, and now I can’t move and I can’t hear the whale sing. It’s all squeeze and no song.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m scared too. Here. This is my drawing of the moon-song. I drew the light and the water. You can look at it while we help.
The crab stopped struggling and looked at the picture. Kamala knelt in the shallow water and hummed the lullaby, low and slow.
⟨Character 3⟩: La la la, la la, moon on the water. There. That’s the part I know. The rest is still hiding, but it’s close now.
⟨Character 2⟩: Wait. ⟨Character 4⟩’s bark. Did you hear that? The shell wobbled when he barked. ⟨Character 4⟩, again. This time I’ll help.
Rohan howled softly, and ⟨Character 4⟩ barked. The huge shell shook and cracked along the seam, opening like a door.
Crab: I’m out! I’m out! Look at me, I’m small again. The shell was too big all along. Thank you, good dog. Thank you, everyone.
The whale’s hum returned, deep and warm, rolling through the water. The crab scuttled to a smaller shell that fit just right, then thanked them again.
⟨Character 3⟩: La la la, la la, moon on the water. La la la, sleep till the morning. I remember the next line. It came back. And I’ll teach you the first line, Aanya.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m drawing your new shell, little crab. It fits you perfectly. Then I think I need a nap.
⟨Character 2⟩: Just five more minutes. Then I’ll carry the sketchbook back. Or you can lean on me.
The bright blue moon glowed, and the sea lay still. ⟨Character 4⟩ curled his tail over his nose and slept. The family lay on the warm sand and dozed.
The moon is humming softly now, and the sea is warm. Goodnight, Aanya. Goodnight, Rohan. Goodnight, Kamala. Goodnight, ⟨Character 4⟩.
