Chapter 1: The Hum That Wasn't There

The cliff path was warm with evening, the sea a wide grey sheet below, and the lighthouse dark against the sky.

⟨Character 1⟩: ⟨Character 2⟩, come on. From up here I can draw the whole coast, look, the rocks all the way to the point where the wind curls. But the tower should be lit by now. It’s never dark. Not once, all summer.

⟨Character 2⟩: Maybe it’s having a nap. Or maybe the lighthouse is just shy. It heard you coming with your bossy map and hid its light under the blanket.

⟨Character 1⟩: Ha ha. Look at this, the needle’s glowing, just a little, and pointing straight at the tower. And listen. Remember that low hum the light used to make? Every few seconds, like a heartbeat? It’s gone.

⟨Character 2⟩: If it doesn’t hum, ships can’t hear where the rocks are. That last boat out there tonight, the one with the fishing nets, it needs the light. So we better go up and wake it up.

Inside the lantern room the great lamp sat cold and pale under its glass.

⟨Character 1⟩: My map says the old song was one note, every few seconds, low as a cello. So we teach the lighthouse to sing again. Standing here telling it to hum is not a plan.

⟨Character 2⟩: Fine, bossy. Let me try something clever first. Never mind the cards. Let’s just hum, both of us, and see if it joins in.

⟨Character 1⟩: All right. Hmmmm. Hmmmm. Your turn.

⟨Character 2⟩: Hmmmm. It’s listening. I swear it’s listening. Keep humming, keep humming. Sing, you tall shy thing.

Chapter 2: The Song That Wouldn't Start

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m drawing every part of the tower and labeling it. Then I hum into the lamp, and it goes hmmmm, and the glass goes ping when a card taps it at the right spot.

⟨Character 2⟩: You hum straight at the glass. It’s a shy lighthouse. It saw your map and ran off. Let me try one clever card, at the crank, like this.

⟨Character 1⟩: The lighthouse flickered. It didn’t. And slow down. A whole tower can flick with a card tap, and nothing sings. We need a song, and then it didn’t sing, so five seconds of listening. Outside. All of us in one song, slow and steady.

A deep, mournful moan rolled up from the sea. A ship was out in the mist, long and sad, and lost.

⟨Character 2⟩: That’s very polite. But more cards are just ship, not enough. It has to be its own sound. So stop humming into it. I broke the rhythm, too fast, right? There, look, the sound went into the glass. But it wasn’t its voice. ⟨Character 2⟩.

⟨Character 1⟩: The wind! Wind spinning across the lantern makes a hum. So we could make a rhythm from my kite. From the sail?

⟨Character 2⟩: Get to the platform and throw this kite, mate, just left right left right the lamp against the wind. It sings. And I don’t have a map for any of it. But I have a trick. Remember?

The sea was all dark hush beneath them, and above, the tower waited to sing its own song, made of wind and turning.

Chapter 3: A Song for the Sea

⟨Character 1⟩: Here’s where the wind curls around the west side, where the tower turns narrow. Tie your kite string to the crank, not too tight. The kite lifts, it hums, and the wind does the singing for us.

⟨Character 2⟩: One kite, one crank, one slow turn at a time. It’s already humming. There. Hmmmmm.

⟨Character 1⟩: It’s the same note from my map. Keep it steady, I’ll match the pitch, hmmmmm, lower now, good. Listen.

A low warm note rolled through the tower. The great lamp woke, gold and gold, and the compass in ⟨Character 1⟩’s pocket glowed bright as a lantern.

⟨Character 2⟩: The light is moving! Out past the rocks, a ship turning. It’s following our song! Cheap trick, maybe, but slow and steady, just like you keep saying. And slow. Steady as we go. Out on the foggy cliff's edge, the moon broke through in a bright path, right toward home.

⟨Character 1⟩: I like this version better. Not a mystery song, a good one. Hmmmmmm. Goodnight. My bossy map. I wish it had a place to leave and someone yelling at you. I am asleep now, too,

Bravo. Oh good kid. Sailing now, I fell asleep listening and off to bed we go, hmmmm. (bed now)

⟨Character 2⟩: I can't believe it worked. Hmmmmm is my new trick. Watch me make my cards vanish in a flutter, exactly in the same song slow as the coast coast, sinking down. And it’s listening."

And as the lighthouse hums its gentle tune, ⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ drift off to sleep. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩.

A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩, what sound would you teach a lighthouse to sing?
