Chapter 1: The Silent Light

⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ race up the hill to the lighthouse, where Bernard is packing a small suitcase.

⟨Character 1⟩: Bernard, why is your suitcase out? Are you going somewhere?

Bernard: Tonight’s my last night, ⟨Character 1⟩. The lighthouse has been silent for years, and I’m retiring at dawn. I just wish I could hear it sing once more.

⟨Character 2⟩: Sing? A lighthouse? I bet I can make it sing with a card trick!

Bernard: It was never a trick, ⟨Character 2⟩. The song was like a heartbeat, slow and steady. There are pipes inside that once hummed with it, but I don’t know how to bring it back.

⟨Character 1⟩: My map of the bay has a blank spot right where the lighthouse is. Maybe the song is the missing piece.

They climb the spiral stairs to the lamp room. ⟨Character 1⟩ sketches the lamp, while ⟨Character 2⟩ performs a card trick with a flourish, but only the wind answers.

⟨Character 1⟩: The beam sweeps like a conductor’s baton. If we can match its rhythm, maybe we can teach it to sing.

⟨Character 2⟩: And I’ll keep the beat with my cards! We’ll come back at sunset tomorrow with a plan. You’ll see, Bernard!

Chapter 2: The Missing Note

⟨Character 1⟩ spreads her drawings across the flat floor while ⟨Character 2⟩ shuffles his cards.

⟨Character 1⟩: Look at this, ⟨Character 2⟩. Every time the beam sweeps around, it's the same slow arc, like a conductor lifting a baton. If the light keeps time, the pipes could keep the tune. I've marked the turns here and here, and the gaps between them are almost even. That's not a coincidence, that's a rhythm waiting for someone to join in.

⟨Character 2⟩: Or maybe the lighthouse just needs a really good trick. I could make a kite that dips every time the beam passes, like a card fanning out of the deck. Twice as fast, twice the shine. Honestly, my plan is better. We all know it.

⟨Character 1⟩: Your kite and my wind map together, then. We combine them, and neither of us gets to say whose idea it started as. Deal?

⟨Character 2⟩: Deal. But if the kite is the star, I'm taking the bow. I've been practising my bow, actually. Three seconds, chin up, dramatic flourish. Perfect.

The next evening, on the lighthouse platform, the kite lifts high, but the wind swings hard and wraps the string around the tower.

⟨Character 2⟩: The string's round the tower and the kite's doing loops like a card that won't settle. You'd think I planned the comedy! Come help me pull, before it writes a whole new knot in the sky.

⟨Character 1⟩: ⟨Character 2⟩, stop! My foot's on something, and it's moving. Listen. That low hum, it's coming from under the grate. There are pipes down here, big ones, the whole lighthouse is an instrument!

Bernard: Storm's rolling in fast, the rain's already here! Get inside, both of you! We'll check the pipes at first light, and we'll make them sing whether the rain likes it or not!

Chapter 3: The Song in the Storm

The storm passes. At dawn, Bernard stands by the open door with his suitcase, while ⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ kneel at the pipes.

⟨Character 1⟩: One more chance, Bernard. The pipes are mostly fine, just one bend. Please, let us try.

⟨Character 2⟩: I've got the heartbeat. Slow and steady, like the sea. If you match the light to it, maybe the pipes will hum along.

Bernard: It's working, the light's flashing in time, and there's the hum, deep and warm. Oh, I know this song. This is how it used to sing, as steady as the tide when I was a little boy.

⟨Character 1⟩: Keep the rhythm, ⟨Character 2⟩. I'll guide the beam, and you hold the beat. Now, together.

A gentle, steady note, like a heartbeat and the sea mixed together, slow and steady, slow and steady.

They sit on the hill as the lighthouse sings across the bay, and Bernard holds out his brass pocket watch.

Bernard: That's yours now. Every time it sings, it's a little different. Some things can only be felt, not charted.

⟨Character 1⟩: Like a card trick. You never get the same shuffle twice. Slow and steady, ⟨Character 2⟩.

The lighthouse sings its slow, steady note, and the stars fade into dawn as they drift off on the hill.

And the lighthouse still sings, slow and steady, while the sea keeps time. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, and Bernard.

A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ found a song that lives in the light and the pipes. What would your map of a song look like?
