Chapter 1: The Silent Tower

A low wind pulled at the grass on the cliff. ⟨Character 1⟩ sat with her back against the lighthouse wall, a map half drawn on her knees. ⟨Character 2⟩ ran along the path, letting out string for his red kite.

⟨Character 2⟩: It’s really pulling today! I can feel it in my arm. You should try it instead of drawing all afternoon.

⟨Character 1⟩: Someone has to map this place properly. The last chart was wrong about the rocks near the point. Besides, the kite would just get in my way.

⟨Character 2⟩: You always say that. But the wind’s perfect for tricks. Watch this!

⟨Character 2⟩ let the kite swoop low, then pulled it back up. ⟨Character 1⟩ sighed but kept drawing. Then a low moan came from the tower above them, like a note struck on a broken instrument.

⟨Character 1⟩: Did you hear that? It came from the lighthouse. The lamp’s been dark for days, but I’ve never heard it make that sound.

⟨Character 2⟩: Maybe it’s the wind in the railing. Or maybe the tower’s trying to tell us something. Let’s go see!

They climbed the spiral stairs to the lamp room. On a dusty shelf, a small wooden box sat with its lid open. Inside, a metal comb with teeth bent and missing.

⟨Character 1⟩: It’s a music box. The comb’s damaged, so it can’t pluck the notes. I’ve seen one like this in a shop. If we can fix it, maybe the lighthouse will have its voice back.

⟨Character 2⟩: But how do we fix it? We don’t have new teeth. Maybe the wind can play it. If we tie it to the railing and let the wind hit the comb just right…

⟨Character 1⟩: That’s not how it works. The comb needs to be plucked by the cylinder. We need to repair it properly. I’ll need to study the gears and find what’s missing.

⟨Character 2⟩: But that could take forever. Your way is too slow. Let me try my kite string. I can tie it to the box and the wind will do the rest. Trust me.

⟨Character 1⟩: Fine. We’ll try your idea first. But if it doesn’t work, we do it my way. Deal?

⟨Character 2⟩: Deal! You won’t be sorry. I’ll get the string.

Chapter 2: The Night the Tower Sang

Dusk turned the sea to slate. ⟨Character 2⟩ looped his kite string through the music box and knotted it round the railing. ⟨Character 1⟩ held the box steady. The wind pushed through the comb, and a single faint note drifted out.

⟨Character 2⟩: There! You hear that? One note. Now if I tighten this here and angle the box just a bit more, the wind should catch the whole comb.

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait. It’s not just the comb. Look at this gear. It’s missing a tooth, so the cylinder sticks and jams. That’s why the note cut off.

⟨Character 2⟩: So my string idea was good, but the gear’s the problem? We don’t have another gear. What do we use?

⟨Character 1⟩ dug in her pocket and pulled out a small shell, ridged and pale, that she’d picked up on the beach. She turned it in her fingers, then fitted it into the empty space. It clicked.

⟨Character 1⟩: The ridges match the teeth. It might just turn the cylinder. Let the string go.

⟨Character 2⟩ loosened the string. The wind pressed through the comb, the shell gear turned, and the lighthouse began to sing. A slow, warm melody rose up the tower and out over the water, and a beam of light swept across the waves.

⟨Character 2⟩: It’s singing. It’s actually singing. The ships will see it now. They’ll hear it.

⟨Character 1⟩: You were right about the wind. I was too busy planning to listen. I’m glad we tried your way first.

⟨Character 2⟩: And your shell gear did the rest. We make a good team. Even when we argue.

They sat together against the wall, the melody circling above them, the beam sweeping out and back. ⟨Character 2⟩’s head dropped onto ⟨Character 1⟩’s shoulder, and her eyes closed. The lighthouse kept singing over the sleeping sea.

The lighthouse will always sing now, and ⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ are sleeping peacefully. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩.
