Chapter 1: The Silent Song
The balcony railing is cold under ⟨Character 1⟩’s elbows. She leans over her map, pencil scratching. ⟨Character 2⟩ sits cross-legged on the tiles, a deck of cards sliding between his fingers.
⟨Character 2⟩: Pick a card. Any card. But don’t show me. Just look at it and think hard. I’ll read your mind through the railing. That’s a trick I learned from a man on the ferry. He had a beard and everything.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m not picking a card. I’m drawing the coast. See? From the flat to the point, then out to the island. The lighthouse should be right here. It’s always blinking by now. Every evening at seven. But look at it. Dark. Not even a glow. Something’s wrong.
⟨Character 2⟩: Maybe it’s having a nap. Even lighthouses need a nap. Here, I’ll make the cards point to it. Watch.
He fans the cards. A gust of wind lifts the whole deck. They flutter up and spin, then drift down in a line, all pointing at the dark lighthouse on its rocky island. The railing hums under ⟨Character 1⟩’s hands, a low buzz like a trapped bee.
⟨Character 1⟩: Did you feel that? The railing’s vibrating. That’s not the wind. It’s like the lighthouse is trying to say something and can’t. I’ve never heard it this quiet. We should row out. The boat’s still tied below. You bring the cards. I’ll bring the map.
⟨Character 2⟩: Row out? In the dark? Yes. Definitely yes. But if we get cold soup for supper, I’m blaming you. Grab the torch. I’ll get the oars. And the cards. The cards are coming. They started this.
The boat slides over black water. The island looms. Inside the lighthouse, dust covers the gears. A speaker sits cracked on a shelf. ⟨Character 1⟩ wipes a plaque clean with her sleeve.
⟨Character 1⟩: It says ‘Speaks with the voice of two.’ That’s a code. It has to be. Maybe two words? Two notes? Two people? Something about the mechanism. Let’s try shouting our names. Loud. Like a call and response. Ready? One, two, three. ⟨Character 1⟩!
⟨Character 2⟩: ⟨Character 2⟩! That’s me. Hello, lighthouse. It’s us. Say something back. Please? Pretty please with a cherry on top? It just groaned. Did you hear that? Like a big rusty sigh. It’s trying. It wants to answer. It just can’t find the right harmony.
⟨Character 1⟩: Harmony. Two voices. Not one after the other. Together. That’s what the plaque means. We can’t just shout our own names. We have to sing with two. Come on. We’ll figure it out. Tomorrow. I need to think. But we’re coming back.
Chapter 2: Tea and Teamwork
The lighthouse stairs smell of salt and old rope. ⟨Character 1⟩ pours tea from a thermos into two tin cups. ⟨Character 2⟩ lays his cards out in neat rows on the dusty bench.
⟨Character 2⟩: No cold soup tonight. Just tea and a silent lighthouse. I tried singing one note off the top card, the ace of hearts, but the gears only spun for a second and quit. Like they forgot the rest. Here you draw a line, I’ll hum where it goes.
⟨Character 1⟩: Start at the rocky point. Along the harbour wall. Round the bay and out. I’ll hum the coastline. Listen. It goes low, then rises where the cliffs are. See, the line hums in my fingers. Try the card note again the same time.
The lighthouse hums one warm note. The lamp flickers. Then it dims. ⟨Character 2⟩ slumps back against the bench.
⟨Character 2⟩: It almost had it. One note and a flicker, then nothing. Wait. What if we both do it at the same time? Not the card first, then the map. Both together. The echo comes down from the horn and we feed it right back. Sing with two, like the plaque says. Ready? I’ll cue you.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m ready. On the ace of hearts, I’ll sing the cliff note. You take the harbour note. Two notes, one breath. Let’s teach it gently.
Cards tap the bench in a slow rhythm. ⟨Character 2⟩ hums low. ⟨Character 1⟩ hums high. The sound rises to the horn, comes back warm, and they hum it out again. The voice box stutters, then swells into a hum that rolls across the water.
⟨Character 2⟩: It’s singing. A lullaby. Low then high, low then high. The beam’s turning. We did it. We taught the lighthouse to sing.
⟨Character 1⟩: You did half of it. The echo fed back through us. Keep the rhythm slow. It’s setting us to sleep, ⟨Character 2⟩. Cards on the bench. Map under my head. The lamp’s dimming right down. Gently now.
The lighthouse hums low, then high. The lamp softens. Two small shapes breathe on the bench as the warm sound drifts out to sea like fog.
The lighthouse sings softly: ‘Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩.’ May you both drift off now.
A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩ and ⟨Character 2⟩ discovered that working together made a kind of music they couldn’t make alone. What sound do you think they’ll dream about tonight?
