Chapter 1: The Setup
Three monitors glow in the dark of ⟨Character 1⟩’s office, the only light on his face.
⟨Character 1⟩: “Rohan, you absolute idiot. You sold my code to Vick? For what, a pat on the head?” He sips cold coffee, grimaces, and sets the mug down. “I built that system from scratch, every line of it. And you just handed it over like a cheap pen.” He types furiously, then stops, staring at the screen. “No. I’m not letting this slide.” He picks up his phone and dials. “Zara, it’s ⟨Character 1⟩. I need you and Kade. Tonight. Garage. Bring your gear.”
An underground garage, concrete walls sweating with damp. ⟨Character 1⟩ stands by a support pillar, arms crossed.
Zara: “You look like hell, ⟨Character 1⟩. When’s the last time you slept?” She leans against a car, arms folded, a laptop bag slung over her shoulder. “And don’t lie. I can see the bags under your eyes from here.”
Kade: “Yeah, and you smell like stale coffee and bad decisions.” He grins, twirling a lockpick between his fingers. “So what’s the job? Must be big if you’re calling us.” He pockets the pick. “I’m in, whatever it is, as long as the payout’s worth it.”
⟨Character 1⟩: “It’s Vick’s office. He’s got my code. I designed his security system, so I know every blind spot, every camera, every sensor. We go in, take the code, and sell it to a buyer named Silas. We split three ways, even. But I need you both. Zara, you handle the alarms. Kade, the locks.” He pauses, meeting their eyes. “And I need you to trust me. I know I’m not easy to work with, but this is personal.”
Zara: “Trust you? ⟨Character 1⟩, you once locked yourself out of your own server room for six hours because you didn’t want to ask for help. But fine. I’m in. Just don’t make me regret it.” She zips open her bag, pulling out a small device. “The alarms are a joke. I’ll have them down in seconds.”
Chapter 2: The Heist
Vick’s office building, floors dark except for the server room. Zara’s device blinks green. Kade eases the last door open, and ⟨Character 1⟩ slips inside.
Zara: “Alarm’s down. You’ve got maybe six minutes before the patrol loop resets. The code should be on the mirror drive. Grab it and let’s go.” She taps her laptop, checking the camera feeds. “And ⟨Character 1⟩, try not to touch anything you don’t have to. I mean it.”
⟨Character 1⟩: “Got it. Right where I left it. Vick didn’t even change the directory name. Idiot.” He slides the drive into his jacket. “Let’s move.” Then the corridor lights snap on, harsh and white. Boots on tile. “Wait. That’s not the patrol.”
Silas: “No, it’s not.” Silas steps into the doorway, flanked by two guards, a slim black case in his hand. “⟨Character 1⟩. I was hoping you’d come yourself. Vick sends his regards. We had a deal, you and me, but Vick offered more. So hand over the code, and maybe we all walk out of here.”
Zara: “You set us up? You were the buyer, you slimy, double-crossing…” She takes a step forward, and a guard raises his gun. “Fine. Fine. But I’m not giving you anything.”
⟨Character 1⟩: “Everyone calm down. You want the code, Silas? Give me a minute to think.” He glances at Zara, then Kade. “Zara, when I say, you take the stairs. Kade, stay close to me.”
Silas: “One minute, ⟨Character 1⟩. That’s all you get. Then my men start shooting. And I don’t think your friends here want to be heroes. So think fast.”
Chapter 3: The Last Minute
The server room hums. Silas’s countdown hits twenty. ⟨Character 1⟩’s hand drifts to the wall beside him, to the red fire alarm box.
⟨Character 1⟩: “Zara, now!” The alarm shrieks, red light washing the room. He shoves the drive into her hands and pushes her toward the door. “Take Kade. Go. I’ll hold them.” A guard fires. Kade goes down hard, gripping his leg, blood between his fingers. Zara screams his name and hauls him up by the jacket.
Zara: “You’re not staying! ⟨Character 1⟩, you come with us!” She gets an arm under Kade’s shoulder, half-carrying him toward the stairwell. “Don’t you dare get yourself killed for this. Don’t you dare.”
⟨Character 1⟩: “Get him to the car. I’ll be right behind you.” He turns. Silas lunges, and ⟨Character 1⟩ catches his wrist, slams it against the server rack until the gun clatters loose. A fist catches his ribs, then he drives his elbow into Silas’s jaw and Silas drops, stunned, into the red light. ⟨Character 1⟩ sways, breathing hard.
The alley behind the building, rain coming down. Zara gets Kade into the back seat. ⟨Character 1⟩ limps out the fire door, empty-handed.
Zara: “⟨Character 1⟩! Get in! Police are three blocks out, I can hear them!” She holds the door open, rain soaking her sleeve. “We still have the code. We can still sell it. Just get in the car.”
⟨Character 1⟩: “No. You take it. Sell it, split it, get his leg fixed. I’m done.” He shuts the door gently. The car pulls away, tail lights smearing in the wet. He stands in the rain, a single rupee coin turning in his fingers, and watches the police lights come. Then he walks the other way, alone.
It's okay to rest now. Everyone made it through the night, and they'll find each other again. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, ZARA. Goodnight, KADE. Goodnight, Zara. Goodnight, Kade. Goodnight, Silas.
A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩, was the price of loyalty worth more than the money?
