Chapter 1: The Best Plan Ever Built
Rain hammers the office window. ⟨Character 1⟩ sits behind three monitors, a container of biryani steaming beside the keyboard. A red timer on the center screen counts down from ten minutes.
⟨Character 1⟩: Anand, you with me? Check the panel diagram one more time. Farah, give me the van feed. I want to see Bhatt’s route before we move.
Anand: I’m here. The diagram’s open. It’s just… the staff door sensor. It’s a newer model than the one in the photo. I can still bypass it, but I’ll need an extra minute.
Farah: You don’t have an extra minute. Bhatt’s on shift tonight. He does his rounds at 04:10, not 04:15 like your schedule says. I’ve watched him for three weeks. He’s never late.
⟨Character 1⟩: Bhatt’s a night officer with a walkie and a flashlight. I’ll meet him at the stairwell with a work order and a security tech jacket. He’ll sign the log and go back to his tea. I’ve done this before.
Farah: He takes his tea with three sugars and a slice of ginger. And he doesn’t ask questions when someone’s polite. But if you’re not polite, he asks plenty. You’re not polite, ⟨Character 1⟩.
⟨Character 1⟩: That’s why he won’t ask any. I’ll be polite. I’ll be so polite he’ll forget his own name. Now, Anand, you clear the camera loop at 04:02. Farah, you call the seconds. I go in at 04:04. The vault door starts its own ten-minute count. Two minutes for the cabinet, four for the backup files, three for turnaround. That leaves one minute of slack. We don’t need slack.
Anand: One minute of slack? That’s nothing. What if the door sticks? What if the sensor’s slower than we think?
⟨Character 1⟩: Then we improvise. That’s what the extra minute is for. Now stop worrying about the door and worry about your hands. You’re shaking from here.
Farah: He’s shaking because you haven’t slept since I met you. You look like a man who’s been living on biryani and spite for a month.
⟨Character 1⟩: Sleep is for people who aren’t me. Now focus. We hit the bank in three hours. I want everyone in position by 03:45.
Three hours later. Rain has stopped. Farah sits in the van outside the bank, watching the monitor. ⟨Character 1⟩ stands in the staff stairwell, jacket bunched at his throat.
Farah: Camera loop is live. Bhatt just left the guard desk. He’s heading for the east corridor. You’ve got ninety seconds before he hits your stairwell.
⟨Character 1⟩: Anand, the panel. Now.
Anand: I’m in. Sensor’s bypassed. Staff door’s unlocked. I’m pulling the camera feed now. You’re clear.
⟨Character 1⟩: Good. I’m moving to the vault. Farah, call the seconds from 04:04. The vault door starts its own countdown. Ten minutes. I’m inside the whole time.
Farah: You insisted on being the one to go in. You know that means you’re the one who has to come out. Don’t forget that.
⟨Character 1⟩: I won’t. Just keep Bhatt away from the vault corridor. And remember, if he shows up, offer him tea. Three sugars, slice of ginger.
Farah: I remember. Now go. Timer’s running.
⟨Character 1⟩ enters the vault room. The door swings shut behind him. A red digital timer on the wall starts counting down from ten minutes. He opens the cabinet and begins working.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m in. Timer’s at 09:58. Cabinet first. Anand, you seeing this? The boxes are all labeled. I’m pulling the files now. This is it. The goal of my life. I’m not leaving until I have every last one.
Farah: Just get the files and get out. You’ve got nine minutes and forty-five seconds. Don’t waste them talking.
⟨Character 1⟩’s eyes sweep the vault. Then he stops. A single deposit box, number 1444, sits in the corner. A label under the metal frame reads: M. Singh. He freezes. Three seconds pass.
Farah: ⟨Character 1⟩? What’s wrong? You’re not moving. Timer’s at 08:20.
⟨Character 1⟩: Nothing’s wrong. I’m earning my money. Keep the channel clear.
Chapter 2: A Door with a Familiar Name
Inside the stairwell, ⟨Character 1⟩ holds the goggles unit to his face. The screen shows Bhatt walking the foyer with his flashlight, sweeping it over the curtains where Farah sits.
Farah: Guys, he’s off the route. He’s supposed to be in the east corridor. He’s in the foyer, right by my curtain. I can see his shoes under the hem.
⟨Character 1⟩: How far off?
Farah: Maybe forty feet. He’s just standing there. He’s got his walkie in his hand. He hasn’t keyed it. He’s just… listening. I think he heard the panel door close.
⟨Character 1⟩: All right. Anand, you’re done with the cabinet?
Anand: Done. Eight minutes on the vault timer. It’s all yours. But the annex door’s open. If he comes down those stairs, he sees the light.
Farah: He won’t come down. Farah, remember the parking ticket?
Farah: What?
⟨Character 1⟩: You told me once he let you off a parking ticket because you brought him tea. Three sugars. Slice of ginger. If he moves toward the stairs, you bring him tea. There’s a kettle in the staff room on your left.
Farah: You want me to make tea for the night officer while you rob the bank?
⟨Character 1⟩: I want you to be polite. Go. Anand, you’re on the deposit boxes. The list says 1444. Pull it.
Anand drags the box needle along the rows of aluminum lids. A red light blinks next to the deposit panel. ⟨Character 1⟩ watches the timer on his goggles: 06:12.
Anand: 1444. 1444. Here it is. Metal pin’s the same as the one on your sheet. It’s coming open.
⟨Character 1⟩: Open it fully.
The lid lifts. Inside, a creased photograph sits on top of a stack of papers. The back of the photo has writing in faded ink. ⟨Character 1⟩ picks it up. His hands are steady. His face is not.
Farah: ⟨Character 1⟩, what’s happening? Timer’s at 04:40. You’re off comms.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m earning my money. Keep the channel clear.
Farah: That’s not what this is. I’ve known you long enough to know that’s not what this is. Whatever’s in your hand, put it down and walk. We’re at the last minute.
On the wall, the vault timer ticks down. 01:00. ⟨Character 1⟩ is still holding the photo, looking at the name on the deposit box.
Chapter 3: Sixty Five Seconds
Inside the vault, the red timer on the wall reads 00:58. The alarm has already started somewhere behind the walls, a low steady buzz. ⟨Character 1⟩ has box 1444 tucked behind his chair. The photo is in his jacket.
Farah: ⟨Character 1⟩, the entrance barrier just armed itself. It’s coming down. You’ve got fifty-eight seconds and the back bolt isn’t in its frame. Run. Run now.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m pulling drives. I’m leaving the rent packages. I’m only taking what’s addressed.
Farah: Leave the box. You hear me? Leave the box and run.
⟨Character 1⟩ tucks two drives into his jacket and sprints. The corridor floor is wet from the rain that came in with them. The bank’s compressor hums, steady, indifferent.
Farah: Ninety-two. Ninety-two seconds to the gate. It’s closing. ⟨Character 1⟩, it’s closing.
⟨Character 1⟩: I see it. I see the gap.
The vault door slams shut behind him. Three drives are still inside, unread. The safe, the backup files, everything they planned for, all sealed behind it. The gate ahead is halfway down.
Farah: Leave the box. Please. Just leave it.
⟨Character 1⟩ does not leave the box. He throws it through the gap first. It lands and skids. Then he dives. His shoulder hits the concrete hard. The gate comes down across his calf and holds.
Farah: He’s caught. Anand, get him. Get him now.
Anand drags him clear. The box sits on the tarmac, lid still shut. The bank behind them locks down, light by light.
⟨Character 1⟩: Heist is wrong. It’s wrong in the last minute. I can’t undo it. The drives are behind that door. We get nothing.
In the service alley, flashlight beams sweep the far wall. Farah sits on the curb. Anand crouches next to her. ⟨Character 1⟩ leans against the van tire.
Anand: We could try again next month. New plan. It’s just a setback.
Farah: There’s no next month. The bank’s on lock. They’ll have our faces by morning. If they don’t already, it’s because Bhatt’s still making tea.
⟨Character 1⟩: I’m sorry.
Farah: I know.
The compressor hum fades. Real wind moves down the alley. ⟨Character 1⟩’s head drops against the tire. The box stays on his lap, closed. He is asleep before anyone speaks again.
It's okay now. Everything is quiet, and you can rest.
