Chapter 1: Green Then Red
INT. RIVAL SOFTWARE LOBBY - NIGHT. ⟨Character 1⟩ slips a cloned keycard through the smoked glass door at 2:07 a.m. The night guard sleeps at the front desk, a cold coffee cup at his elbow. ⟨Character 1⟩ walks to the desk PC, plugs in his laptop, and types a remote patch he wrote last week. His hands shake as he loops the lobby camera feed and kills the motion alerts.
⟨Character 1⟩: I only want my own code back. Six months of my work, renamed Aurora and stamped with their logo. I am not here to steal from them. I am here to take what was already mine.
⟨Character 1⟩: Loop the feed. The guard keeps dreaming about his cold coffee. In five minutes this building forgets I was ever here. The patch only holds for an hour, so move.
⟨Character 1⟩: Good. Cameras looped, motion sensors off. That patch took me three nights to write, and it just paid for itself.
INT. SERVER ROOM - LATER. ⟨Character 1⟩ opens a server cage with a duplicated admin token. He plugs in a drive and starts copying the Aurora source files. Old commit names scroll past, his own comments still in the code, dated the week before the client ended the contract.
⟨Character 1⟩: There it is. My variable names, my error logging, even my lazy Sunday commit messages. They did not even bother to strip the history. Six months of my life, and they put their company banner on top of it.
⟨Character 1⟩: I will run the cleanup after the copy completes. If something interrupts the transfer, I still want the drive in my hand. Better to leave no trace until the last second, then wipe every byte.
⟨Character 1⟩: Wait. The door badge reader just blinked green, then red. It locked behind me. Why would it lock now? I killed the alarms. Unless the patch just failed.
Chapter 2: The Last Minute
INT. SERVER ROOM - LATER.
⟨Character 1⟩: The copy is at 99 percent, and my patch phone just buzzed with a silent alarm. The system logged me as an intruder because I scheduled the deletion script too late. I have to abort the copy and delete everything right now before it ticks over to 100. If I can stop it, there is no clean file left.
⟨Character 1⟩: I am stabbing the abort command, but the door just sealed behind me. The lights shifted to lockdown red. The server room is now my cell. My own patch just failed, and I am trapped with the code I came to take. The silent alarm is gone out. That was the last minute.
INT. SERVER ROOM AND CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS.
⟨Character 1⟩: The guard is banging on the door and his key scrapes the lock. My own patch just bricked my laptop with a fail-safe I forgot I wrote. Fine. I will pull out the drive and run the corruption script from there. I am not leaving them a single clean line of Aurora.
⟨Character 1⟩: The corruption script is running. It overwrites both copies with noise, the stolen Aurora files on the server and my own drive. I would rather lose everything than hand them a clean theft. My company dies, but I do not become the thief they are.
⟨Character 1⟩: The guard’s key turns in the lock as I kick open the floor vent. I built this floor, I can break it. The vent drops into the service lane. Goodbye, Aurora. I am done here.
EXT. SERVICE LANE - RAIN.
⟨Character 1⟩: The rain soaks me while I sit against the dumpster. My phone says the corrupted data upload failed and the original is gone. No proof remains. The red exit sign above me still hums like a broken alarm. I laugh once, dry, then close my eyes. I am empty, and I am awake.
Rest now, ⟨Character 1⟩. You did what you had to do. Goodnight.
A question for tonight
⟨Character 1⟩, what would you be willing to lose to stay honest?
