Chapter 1: The Engineer's Request

Inside a cramped laboratory, machines hum and a single bulb flickers. Dr. Weiss, elderly and weary, stands by a chair wired with electrodes. ⟨Character 1⟩, 45, blunt and impatient, paces.

⟨Character 1⟩: Look, Doc, I didn’t come here to debate ethics. You built a time machine. I need to use it. April 1945, Berlin. I’m going to kill Hitler and save as many Jews as I can.

Dr. Weiss: And what about paradoxes? You could erase your own existence. You could make things worse. The Holocaust is a fixed point, maybe. We don’t know.

⟨Character 1⟩: One dead dictator is worth a thousand paradoxes. I’m not here to argue. I’m here to go.

Dr. Weiss: You’re a software man, not a soldier. You think killing Hitler is like debugging code? It’s not. It’s blood and chaos. And the Jews, you can’t save them all.

⟨Character 1⟩: I know I can’t save them all. But I can save some. And I can kill that bastard. That’s more than sitting here talking.

Dr. Weiss: Fine. But you’ll need this. A pistol. And a map of the bunker. The machine will drop you in the chancellery garden. Get in, get out. Don’t linger.

⟨Character 1⟩: Thanks. I’ll take it from here.

⟨Character 1⟩ sits in the time machine, strapped in. He checks the pistol, then the map. He takes a deep breath and pulls the lever.

⟨Character 1⟩: Here we go. No turning back.

Chapter 2: The Bunker

Dust and diesel smoke hang in the chancellery corridor. ⟨Character 1⟩, in a borrowed engineer’s coat, walks past two guards.

Guard: Halt. Papers.

⟨Character 1⟩: Engineer. Sent to check the ventilation. The Fuhrer’s orders.

Guard: Ventilation? At this hour?

⟨Character 1⟩: You want to tell him the air is bad? Be my guest.

The guard grunts and waves him through. ⟨Character 1⟩ enters the bunker proper. Low ceilings, damp concrete, a single candle guttering on a crate. Officials hurry past. At the end of the hall, Hitler stands with three officers, studying a map.

⟨Character 1⟩: Always surrounded. Always talking. I need one clear shot.

Minutes pass. ⟨Character 1⟩ pretends to inspect a vent. Hitler dismisses two officers but keeps one. Then the last officer leaves. Hitler turns to a desk, alone. ⟨Character 1⟩ pulls the pistol.

⟨Character 1⟩: For every Jew you murdered.

He fires. Hitler collapses. The shot echoes. Boots pound the corridor. ⟨Character 1⟩ runs, shoving past a screaming secretary. A guard fires and hits his shoulder. He stumbles but keeps moving.

⟨Character 1⟩: Not yet. Not yet.

He kicks open a storage room door. Inside, a dozen Jewish prisoners huddle, thin and terrified. He fumbles with the lock.

⟨Character 1⟩: Go. Now. Through the kitchen. Don’t stop for anyone.

Prisoner: Who are you?

⟨Character 1⟩: Nobody. Move.

They run. Some make it down the hall. A guard reaches the doorway and fires. ⟨Character 1⟩ takes a bullet in the side and falls. He presses a hand to the wound. Blood seeps between his fingers.

⟨Character 1⟩: Keep going. I’ll hold them.

The prisoners scatter into the smoke. ⟨Character 1⟩ lies on the cold floor, the pistol still in his hand.

Chapter 3: Silence

Smoke and shouting fill the bunker corridor. ⟨Character 1⟩ lies against the wall, blood pooling under his coat. Through the haze he sees the prisoners running, and then he sees two guards open fire. Two of them fall. The rest keep going.

⟨Character 1⟩: Run. Keep running.

A guard kicks him in the ribs, then shouts down the hall that the Fuhrer is dead. Panic breaks out. Soldiers argue, someone screams, a pistol goes off into the ceiling. ⟨Character 1⟩ presses a small brass failsafe stud on the pistol grip, the one Dr. Weiss wired in. The room folds.

He wakes in the forest clearing near the lab. Dusk. Wet leaves. The smell of pine and his own blood. Sarah, a Jewish woman with a torn coat and grey dust in her hair, kneels beside him, pressing cloth to his side.

Sarah: Stay still. You’re bleeding badly. You killed him. You actually killed him. I saw it. Some of us got out. Not all. But some.

⟨Character 1⟩: Some is more than none.

Sarah: Why? Why did you do it? You’re not even one of us.

⟨Character 1⟩: I was sleeping through my life. Eating. Coding. Building websites nobody needed. I read about the camps and went back to bed. That’s not a life. That’s just a pulse.

He fumbles in his coat and pushes a small pouch of gold coins into her hand.

⟨Character 1⟩: Take this. Start somewhere. A new name. A new country. Make it count.

Sarah: Will the world be different? Will it matter?

He turns his head toward the lab lights in the trees. His hand lifts a little, then drops.

⟨Character 1⟩: More.

He dies in the wet leaves. Sarah closes his eyes, digs with her hands until dawn, and buries him. Far away, Hitler is dead. Six million are still gone. She wipes her hands on her coat and walks out of the clearing.

Sleep now, ⟨Character 1⟩. You did something, and some lives were spared. Rest. You have done enough. Goodnight.

A question for tonight
What would you sacrifice to change one terrible thing, even if it must remain mostly unchanged?
