Chapter 1: The Rift Opens

⟨Character 1⟩ wakes face down in wet plaster and broken glass, his mouth full of ash. The time anchor on his wrist reads 5:58 and ticks down. His cracked company laptop opens by itself and prints two lines in white on black: kill hitler, save jews. Through a shattered wall the city burns, and the air stinks of cordite and wet brick.

⟨Character 1⟩: This was supposed to be a website rebuild, not a history lesson. I stepped into a server room on a normal Tuesday, and now I am eating rubble dust in Berlin because the time anchor glitched. Six hours is not enough for one man to kill hitler and save jews, but the laptop gave me the order. I just want my bed.

⟨Character 1⟩: Nine hundred meters east, the Führerbunker. The map is still live on this cracked screen, and the red dot pulses like a dirty heartbeat. No checkpoints if I keep to the ruins. I walk, I do the job, and the rift pulls me home before I miss my own pillow.

He drops into the collapsed metro tunnel, and Abram steps from behind a fallen concrete slab. The man holds a brick in one hand and a torn yellow Star of David in the other.

Abram: You are not from this Berlin. Those clothes are wrong, and you carry light without glass. The SS will shoot you at the first checkpoint, and then your machine will count down inside a ditch. I can help you if you help me, and I know every sewer between here and the river.

⟨Character 1⟩: I do not need help. I need the bunker route, and the laptop says nine hundred meters east. I can walk through burning buildings faster than you can beg for company. I build websites, not armies. Stay out of my way, old man.

Abram: Then you will die before you kill anyone. Twelve of us are hidden in a factory basement two streets north. Get us into the sewers before the patrol returns, and I will guide you to the bunker door myself. Refuse, and you can wear this star while the SS ask questions.

⟨Character 1⟩: I do not do rescue missions. I fix code, I build websites, I sleep, I eat. That is my whole personality, and it has kept me alive. Fine, Abram, lead me to the factory, and if you slow me down I will leave all twelve of you to the rats.

Chapter 2: The Factory

⟨Character 1⟩ crawls behind Abram through a coal chute into a candle lit cellar where twelve Jews are packed against crates, some coughing, a woman with a broken leg sweating on a pallet, her face grey and wet. The air is thick with dust.

Abram: Only one guard at the front gate, but there are more outside, and they will be back soon. We have to move these people before the next patrol checks the coal chute. The drain behind the crates leads to the sewer, but the wounded woman cannot climb alone.

⟨Character 1⟩: I can draw him to the back wall with a loud short circuit. When I trip the fuse box, it will sound like a Soviet shell and he will run. You and Abram get everyone down the drain before he comes back, and no one stops to thank me.

Woman: My leg is broken in two places, and I cannot climb into that drain alone. Help me or leave me, but decide now, because I will not beg.

As the last Jew drops into the drain, a four man SS patrol rounds the corner. A young guard raises his rifle at the woman ⟨Character 1⟩ is lowering, so ⟨Character 1⟩ picks up a brick and swings it into the guard’s temple, killing him. He stares at the body and vomits into the grate before Abram pulls him down.

Abram: Your anchor says 1:58, so you have less than two hours before the rift closes. The war is lost, and killing Hitler now will not stop the camps or open the gates, but these twelve will die if you chase a ghost. You say you only want to go home, but I want to see the river.

⟨Character 1⟩: What am I supposed to do with that? I came to kill Hitler and save Jews, not argue history in a sewer. I am not a soldier, I am a software company owner, and my whole plan was to walk in, shoot, and step back through the rift.

Abram: You cannot do both, ⟨Character 1⟩. Choose now, and make it count.

⟨Character 1⟩: Then you lead them to the Spree and find a boat, because I have seen the bunker on this cracked map and I know the way. Keep the laptop and the map, but give me your pistol before you go. I will go to the bunker alone, and I will not ask you to wait. Go now, and do not look back.

Chapter 3: The Bunker

Hitler: Are you a deserter? This bunker is not a place for stragglers, and you do not belong in the ranks of the Führer. Leave now before I have you shot for cowardice, because I have no patience for rats who slip past the guards. Who let you in here?

⟨Character 1⟩: I am not a deserter, and no one let me in. I am a software company owner from another time, and I came here with one task: to kill Hitler and save Jews. Your thousand-year Reich has hours left, not years. The laptop showed me the map to this study, and my time anchor says 1:12 before I must finish.

Hitler: The Reich will last a thousand years, and your nonsense about other times is the talk of a madman. The Soviet hordes are at the gates, but I will not be taken by a foreigner in a stolen coat. This room will be your tomb, and your story will be forgotten before the smoke clears.

⟨Character 1⟩: Not past this morning. The Jews are already on their way to the river, and Abram is guiding them to a boat. I have two bullets with your name on them, and you will never see another sunrise. I built websites for a living, but today I am here to fix a bigger bug.

⟨Character 1⟩ raises the pistol and shoots Hitler twice in the chest. Hitler’s body falls forward, knocking the lamp from the desk and plunging the room into flickering shadow. Boots hammer in the corridor. ⟨Character 1⟩ steps back, drops the pistol, and stands still as SS guards break through the door.

Woman: The stranger who helped us, he is not coming? We saw the guards at the bunker, and I heard shots from inside. Did he get out before the doors were sealed, or is he still down there with the rifles and the smoke? I cannot leave without knowing he at least had a chance.

Abram: He did not get out. He built a door and stayed behind it so we could reach the river, because the time anchor gave him only two hours and he chose us over his own way home. The rift will close at zero, and when it does, the city will forget him, but I will not. We are twelve Jews alive because he killed Hitler and bought our freedom.

Abram pushes the boat into the current and drops the torn yellow star into the black water. Inside the bunker, SS guards shoot ⟨Character 1⟩ four times. He slumps against the wall, and the time anchor on his wrist reads 0:00. It sends one final pulse that ripples the air over the city and closes the rift with a soft crack. The boat slips past the burning Reichstag, moving toward the American lines, alive.

⟨Character 1⟩, Abram, Woman, you are safe now. Sleep.
