Chapter 1: The Games Begin

The gate creaked like an old swing as ⟨Character 4⟩ shot through it. "Golden Mango!" he yelled, reading a banner. "It says win the Golden Mango!" He tripped over a root and his chips exploded across the path.

A capuchin monkey swung down from a branch, scooped up the bag, and held it out. ⟨Character 4⟩ took it. "Thanks, dude." The monkey tipped an invisible hat. ⟨Character 1⟩ caught up, breathing hard. "Did you just make friends with a monkey?" he asked.

"We're entering," ⟨Character 4⟩ said. "Right now." ⟨Character 1⟩ looked at ⟨Character 2⟩. "Do we have plans?"

⟨Character 2⟩ was already taking a picture. "No," she said. "This is better." ⟨Character 3⟩ dragged her feet behind them. "It's a monkey holding chips," she said. "Calm down." But she was smiling.

At the zoo plaza, a zookeeper in a khaki hat explained the rules. "Each family teams up with one animal. Three challenges. Best overall wins the Golden Mango." ⟨Character 4⟩ raised his hand. "Can I team with him?" The zookeeper squinted at the capuchin. "Biscuit? He's our trickster. Weird choice."

"I like weird," ⟨Character 4⟩ said. The zookeeper handed him a blue ribbon. "First challenge: memory game. Meet at Monkey Island in ten minutes. Don't be late." Biscuit jumped onto ⟨Character 4⟩'s shoulder and chattered.

⟨Character 2⟩ lifted her camera. "One for the album." ⟨Character 3⟩ crossed her arms but stepped into the frame anyway. Biscuit stole ⟨Character 1⟩'s hat and put it on backwards, and nobody made him give it back.

Chapter 2: Swing and a Miss

The zookeeper held up a banana map. “Where did I hide it? Remember, remember, or lose your chance.” Biscuit chattered at the second tree on the left, but ⟨Character 4⟩ pointed to the flower pot. Wrong. The capuchin hopped from his shoulder, skipped to the right spot, and lifted the banana with a grumpy face, then showed it to everyone.

A sigh came from ⟨Character 4⟩’s mouth. “We’ll never win now. Not against the bird kids and the dancing goat.” Biscuit patted his arm, then stuck the banana behind his own ear like a pencil. ⟨Character 4⟩ laughed. It started to feel less like losing and more like something else.

At the steep rope the red flag flapped hard. ⟨Character 4⟩ slipped on the second knot, his feet spun. Biscuit grabbed him by the hood of his shirt and yanked him to safety. Below them ⟨Character 2⟩ said, “Oh… I forgot to press record.” ⟨Character 1⟩ put his hands around his mouth and yelled nonsense: “Turn the wiener dog sideways!” That made everyone laughs.

⟨Character 4⟩ snagged the red token then the yellow. ⟨Character 3⟩ pointed and hollered at one leaf-ish part of the course, being the boss of it. “Grab it before you jump. No, the left left!” The team crossed the rope. Now it’s second place so they are still alive enough to hold a place on the final run. The capuchin took three stones out of its cheek pockets and just had them carry the stuff spinning as it whistled its own zoo monkey tune till all gathered sounds up. Sunlight was melting beneath the slides.

Biscuit finished with those moon eyes closed, only making sure its small hands remain open to wave us and let ⟨Character 3⟩ shut one with hers as final knot ties on the dream she ordered. Tomorrow perhaps together again we had one spot to prove even nice guys get a mango too.

Chapter 3: The Golden Mango

Inside the aviary, feathers floated down like slow snow. ⟨Character 4⟩ followed the trail with the capuchin on his shoulder. Under a nest, something gold glowed. “Got it!” he whispered. But the Peacock team ran in. “We saw it first!” their captain said. The zookeeper came, arms crossed. “Who found it, prove it.”

The capuchin hopped down. It puffed its chest, strutted in a circle, and shook its tail feathers—well, its tail. Everyone laughed. The zookeeper grinned. “That’s proof enough. The mango goes to ⟨Character 4⟩’s team.”

Back at the plaza, the sun dipped low. ⟨Character 4⟩ looked at the golden fruit in his hands. Then he walked to a table, sliced it into little pieces, and gave one to every kid, every zookeeper, and every animal. “Everybody wins,” he said.

⟨Character 3⟩ hugged him. ⟨Character 1⟩ lifted him up. ⟨Character 2⟩ left her camera in her bag and clapped. The capuchin wrapped its small arms around ⟨Character 4⟩’s neck and held on.

As the sky turned orange, the capuchin climbed a tree and waved. ⟨Character 4⟩ waved back. On the drive home, the family talked softly, then went quiet. ⟨Character 3⟩ slept on ⟨Character 2⟩’s shoulder. ⟨Character 4⟩’s eyes closed with a smile, the mango’s sweetness still on his tongue. At the ⟨home⟩, the cats curled around their feet, and everyone slept. Even the mango’s memory, golden and shared. Goodnight, ⟨Character 4⟩.

Kindness is the best prize of all. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, ⟨Character 3⟩, and ⟨Character 4⟩.

A question for tonight
⟨Character 4⟩, ⟨Character 3⟩, have you ever shared something you won and felt even happier?
