Chapter 1: The Light at the Crossing
Rain beads on the traffic light lens as ⟨Character 1⟩ stops at the corner, his stomach growling under his wet coat. The pavement smells hot under the cooling rain.
Red Light: ⟨Character 1⟩. There is an ambulance lost a few streets away. Its navigation chip is dead, and the driver is circling in the rain with only a paper map. You need to listen.
⟨Character 1⟩: Leave me alone. I fix websites, not ambulances. I have not eaten since noon, and my bed is two blocks away, dry and quiet. Go bother someone else.
Red Light: Tonight the ambulance needs both. Give me the hospital’s signal pattern if you want to help. The lights are losing power in the rain, and I cannot hold this intersection much longer.
A lost ambulance rolls up, its siren hiccuping in the wet air, and the driver leans out with a paper map, his face tight with worry. The siren stutters once, then steadies.
Driver: The screen went dark ten minutes ago. I have been circling between these same three streets, and the hospital is somewhere east of here, but the map is smudged from the rain. I keep turning left at every red light.
⟨Character 1⟩: Let me see the navigation chip. Wait, this logo is from my company. My code never fails, but this chip feels like it has been swimming. The seal is cracked, and there is water inside the casing.
Red Light: It drowned in the rain. The chip is sealed wrong from the factory, and your company missed it. Open the control box and I will help you override the signal. The driver still has a chance.
⟨Character 1⟩: Fine. Hold the flashlight steady, driver. I am going in, and I am not coming out until the green lights all the way to the hospital. This should not take long.
Chapter 2: A Wave of Green
The first two lights blink green one after another, but the third, an old amber, shivers and stays red. Rain slides down its lens and the control box hums low.
Amber Light: I cannot turn. The surge will cook my filament. For twenty years I have held this corner through three hailstorms and a hundred heatwaves, but tonight my filament is thin as a spider web. Do not ask me to burn out here in the dark.
⟨Character 1⟩: The error log from your chip, correction, from the ambulance’s chip, says your filament is weak but not broken. I know stubborn when I see it. You have survived worse than a rainstorm, and I will send a repair crew at dawn. Now turn green for the ambulance.
Amber Light: Your stomach just growled like thunder. Are you sure the storm is not right above us? I have heard softer thunder in August. If I turn green and then the sky cracks, my bulb will be the first to go.
⟨Character 1⟩: That was my hunger, not thunder. I have not eaten since noon, and my body thinks it is time for dinner. Here is the deal: you turn green now, and I will bring you a snack tomorrow, maybe a new filament if my company can spare one. Just trust me for ten seconds.
The green wave flows from corner to corner, carrying the ambulance into the hospital bay. The first light hums that the patient is safe, and the driver waves thanks. ⟨Character 1⟩ walks home as the rain slows to a drizzle.
Soft Amber Light: Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. The city is quiet now. You were right about the filament holding. I will keep watch until the crew comes.
⟨Character 1⟩: Goodnight, old friend. And thank you for the green. I am going to eat two dinners and sleep until the sun is up.
The story is finished, and everyone is safe and warm. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. Goodnight, Red Light. Goodnight, Driver. Goodnight, Amber Light. Goodnight, Soft Amber Light.
