Chapter 1: The Kitchen That Dreamed

The DreamDinner hisses like a kettle that forgot its manners. ⟨Character 2⟩’s wooden spoon hovers over the pot. ⟨Character 1⟩ tugs at the plug. ⟨Character 3⟩ scrolls. ⟨Character 4⟩’s head nods.

⟨Character 2⟩: “⟨Character 1⟩, please, just pull it! The whole thing’s smoking!”

⟨Character 1⟩: “I’m pulling! It’s stuck. And this website’s not going to debug itself, so if you could just… hold on.”

⟨Character 3⟩: “Can you two keep it down? I’m trying to watch a video about a cat who plays piano.”

⟨Character 4⟩: “I’m awake. I’m just resting my eyes.”

⟨Character 2⟩: “There. Stopped. See? The reset button. I told you it just needs a hard reset.”

⟨Character 1⟩: “It’s still beeping, ⟨Character 2⟩. That’s not a good beep. That’s a warning beep. I’ll fix it after I finish my code.”

⟨Character 2⟩: “After your code? It’s ten o’clock. Your code can wait. This machine is supposed to cook dinner while we sleep. Not burn the house down while we argue.”

⟨Character 4⟩: “Was that a raccoon? It sounded like a raccoon on the hose.”

⟨Character 2⟩: “⟨Character 4⟩, sit down. It’s just the wind.”

⟨Character 4⟩: “No, the hose went thump. I’m gonna check. Don’t start the machine again without me.”

⟨Character 4⟩ opens the back door. A small purple creature is tangled in the green hose, blinking a tiny light on its chest.

Zorp: “Hello. I am Zorp. My ship is broken. I need soup. Star-shaped, yellow, not too yellow, like my mom’s. Please.”

⟨Character 1⟩: “Is that a… alien? In our hose?”

⟨Character 2⟩: “Star-shaped, yellow, not too yellow? What does that even mean?”

⟨Character 3⟩: “Wait. Star-shaped, yellow. Like… anise? There’s a star anise in my soup.”

Zorp: “Yes! Star! But not crunchy. And warm. And it glows a little. My mom makes it when I’m sad.”

⟨Character 2⟩: “Okay, okay. We can try. But first we need to fix that machine. And maybe untangle you from the hose.”

Chapter 2: Not Too Yellow

The hose came off Zorp in loops. ⟨Character 2⟩ laid him on a dish towel by the counter, and the whole family leaned in around the banged-up DreamDinner.

Zorp: Star-shaped. Yellow. Not too yellow, though. Soft when you poke it. Warm, but not hot. My mother presses it in a bowl and it smells like after-rain. There are little points on top of it. Wait. This lamp is a point on top of things. Like that.

⟨Character 1⟩: So the soup needs geometry. Star. A tetrahedron is a shape where every side is a triangle. Maybe close enough. Give me that, with the six sockets. Hang on. This isn’t even plugged into where I think it is plugged.

⟨Character 2⟩: Nobody touch my settings. Last Tuesday I set the water to 94.6 and by Thursday every spoon in here was burned. Do not. Nope. Cinnamon, a pinch. What is “a pinch”, ⟨Character 1⟩, exactly? For real. How many kilograms?

⟨Character 4⟩: In my game—Jet Wheel Four—when we go past level fifty the bot won’t fight alone. Everybody drops one thing in the box. That’s called the sibling code, JP told me. What if we all drop a spice? All of us. One spice.

⟨Character 2⟩: Okay. Okay. Then I have to admit something. The last batch? I put in sugar. Nothing was measured, so I didn’t write it down, because I didn’t trust what your father would do with that number. Only now, if this janky soup needs a hit of sweet—the white tin in the cabinet. Everyone, honest. Favorite flavor. Let’s go.

⟨Character 1⟩: Sugar fixes setting, that’s what she just said. This machine isn’t bugging out, I told you, somebody uncalibrated it and won’t say who. Fact. Put your finger in that button. Pops. Reset. Smell that. There’s the smell question about their mother. And the taste we got here isn’t cinnamon. Where'd it go?

Red lights jumped warning across the DreamDinner; each beep looked a bit less sure than the previous one.

⟨Character 3⟩: Its star readings break logs fix—ugh. It’s not on beeps, I don’t see why we’re just accepting some panel truth.” Why instead would I not. Fine. Which are of all way change based weird. Dude. Like it wants keycode hint here: preference would log need family recipe, eight hands, no way robot-only bottom limits. This lil thing what has extra lines not sing mean when you look—the mixing section here has 'measure' isn’t—sorry.' Most pick special measures list kind values changes weights all whole lot. Every number ten choices probably get exact? You wouldn’t want it written by you all until it is full choose gets.

⟨Character 1⟩: What.

⟨Character 3⟩: The machine reads preferences. Not lab measurements. Equal to amounts? No—for you each tiny. Anyway. Mi— I— I like lime and that’s mine,

⟨Character 4⟩: Why pause in the midd,

⟨Character 3⟩: Fine. Mine is lime. Fine.

⟨Character 4⟩: Whoa. Look.

⟨Character 1⟩: That chug started up by itself.

Then the DreamDinner poured once into a little tureen one cup and stopped.

⟨Character 2⟩: Taste does still. Actually a like. There's energy under my tongue.

⟨Character 4⟩: A fuzziness is. Oh no. A short-circuit is happening. And the screen right t black black—

A little chime filled every part of the silence. Warm faint from inside the maker.

Chapter 3: Soy Sauce and Starlight

The backyard smelled like hose water and warm soy sauce. Everyone stood around Zorp’s little ship, which was stuck between two rose bushes and blinking a slow message at the sky.

⟨Character 4⟩: Okay, okay, I see the lights. There are four blinks, then one long blink, then one little blink. That’s not a real code. In my game, four red lights means the battery is low, and one long squeeze means hide. Zorp, is your ship playing hide? Also the long blink could be a zero, because zeros are round, and round things hide. Wait, no, that’s the moon level. The moon level is different.

Zorp: That’s not a moon level, ⟨Character 4⟩. My ship talks in tummy-taps.” The little purple alien put a hand on the cracked side of the ship. “Four taps mean I can still fly a little bit. The long one is my mother calling. The tiny one means something sweet fell out of the pantry door. But I ate my cookie three days ago, so.

Zorp: Oh! No dessert. Yes. Four light. One long. One short.” Zorp went quiet, counting on his fingers. “No dessert? I showed you no dessert. Hilarious, honestly.

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait, that’s a message on his hull. How do five lights say no dessert?

⟨Character 2⟩: Put it in your pocket, ⟨Character 4⟩. It’s not time to eat it yet.

⟨Character 1⟩: ⟨Character 2⟩’s right, for once. Remember not to eat those in the kitchen, and nothing near my screens.

⟨Character 2⟩: Let me talk to him a minute. Bapu made every complicated machine in our house fix itself when I stood beside it. When I held that wooden spoon over her pot, things evened out, is what I mean.

Chapter 4: One More Batch

The backyard went quiet, and the small purple light lifted off the grass, smaller and smaller, until it was just a point among the stars. ⟨Character 2⟩ walked back inside.

⟨Character 2⟩: Oh. The machine’s been busy while we were out there. There’s a full pot in here — a new one. Still steaming. The DreamDinner didn’t wait for permission.

⟨Character 1⟩: I’m not cleaning all this tonight. I’ll just — push a newspaper over the flour, carry two pans to the sink slowly. Turn the tap on low.

⟨Character 1⟩: Go sit, Nehu. I’ll heat the water. Two cups. We don’t talk business. We don’t talk about ten of anything.

⟨Character 4⟩: Do we really have to save the soup? Or can it sit so we could sleep for a little bit? Only my eyes won’t keep open anymore. Also I maybe left the flour on my own face on purpose so it looked like I helped.

⟨Character 3⟩: You did not. Fine, drain this teapot and I’ll sleep right here. That was actually for me. I said that out loud. Sleeping now.

⟨Character 1⟩: Let’s fold ⟨Character 4⟩ right on the counter. Just as he is. Unknot his sneakers, not too well — legs tire. Sleep, pirate. The ship signal is gone now, all tucked away.

⟨Character 2⟩: Nice.

May your dreams be as warm and messy as that kitchen, and may each of you rest as peacefully as ⟨Character 3⟩ and ⟨Character 4⟩ did after their grand adventure. Goodnight, ⟨Character 3⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 4⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 2⟩. Goodnight, ⟨Character 1⟩. And goodnight, Zorp.

A question for tonight
What do you think the DreamDinner will cook for ⟨Character 1⟩, ⟨Character 2⟩, ⟨Character 3⟩, and ⟨Character 4⟩ next? Maybe something with cheese?
