Chapter 1: The Plan

A stained blueprint is taped across two crates in the drafty dark of a warehouse. Priya’s flashlight shakes a little as she holds it steady.

Priya: My hand keeps slipping. I’m not scared, I’m just cold. Okay, I’m a bit scared.

⟨Character 1⟩: The guard walks this loop every eleven minutes. Here. And here. He never looks up. People never look up.

Dev: Eleven minutes. Plenty of time to get in, get the drive, and get out. Also plenty of time for you to fall asleep on a crate.

⟨Character 1⟩: I slept four hours. That’s a luxury.

Ravi: And the keypad? The one under the campus?

⟨Character 1⟩: I built a website for their security contractor three years ago. I know the default codes. It’s a software problem, not a people problem.

Priya: That’s what worries me. Software changes. People don’t. What if they patched it?

⟨Character 1⟩: Then we chew gum and think. Relax.

Dev: You know, for a guy who owns a company, you’re terrible at small talk. You’d rather stare at a wall than say hello.

⟨Character 1⟩: Walls don’t ask stupid questions.

Priya: I’m serious. This feels too simple. One guard, one door, one drive. Where’s the catch?

⟨Character 1⟩: The catch is you keep talking. Ravi, check the radio. Dev, the gloves. We move in ten.

The boiler room next door smells of rust and old heat. ⟨Character 1⟩ crouches by a keypad wired to a small black device.

⟨Character 1⟩: This kills the keypad for ninety seconds. Enough to open the door. I tested it on a dummy unit last night.

Priya: Ninety seconds. That’s the whole plan? No backup? No second option?

⟨Character 1⟩: Backup is for people who plan to fail. I don’t plan to fail.

Dev: He’s not antisocial, he’s just allergic to conversation. It’s a medical condition.

⟨Character 1⟩: Dev, hold this. Don’t drop it.

Ravi: Testing the EMP now?

⟨Character 1⟩: No reason to wait.

A faint click. The keypad’s small red light dies. ⟨Character 1⟩ nods once.

⟨Character 1⟩: Dead. Now we go.

Priya: And if the door doesn’t open?

⟨Character 1⟩: Then we walk home. But it will. I built their website, remember?

At the door, ⟨Character 1⟩ stops and picks up a wrapped sandwich from a crate.

Dev: You’re bringing a sandwich?

⟨Character 1⟩: I’ll need the energy.

Ravi: To a heist?

⟨Character 1⟩: Especially to a heist.

Chapter 2: The Score

The anteroom is white and cold, lit by strip lights that hum like insects. Priya kneels at the keypad, a screwdriver between her teeth.

⟨Character 1⟩: Nobody goes in first. We wait. I go in, then Ravi, then Dev, then Priya. That order.

Priya: The code didn’t take. The EMP killed the cameras, but the door code changed. I have to do this by hand.

Ravi: How long?

Priya: One minute. Maybe two. Don’t rush me.

Dev: We’ve got a whole night. Unless the guard grows a sixth sense.

⟨Character 1⟩: He’s on his loop. Eleven minutes. We’re fine.

The keypad gives a soft green blink. The vault door slides open on a quiet rail, and cold air rolls out.

Dev: That’s it? That was easy.

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait.

Priya: What is it?

⟨Character 1⟩: It smells like a setup. Everything was too easy. The guard, the code, the door. I built their website three years ago, they should have patched it.

Ravi: Where’s the drive?

The vault is bare. No racks, no cables, only a single small drive on a steel table under a lamp.

Dev: Here. Let’s go.

A small amber light blinks on the wall beside the door. A flat voice speaks from a speaker grill.

That is a decoy. Fail-safe lockdown in thirty seconds.

Priya: Thirty seconds?

⟨Character 1⟩: The drive is a decoy. The real one is already gone. They emptied this place before we got here.

Ravi: Get to the door!

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait. This thing is a transmitter. If we run now, they’ll know exactly where we go.

Priya: Then drop it!

⟨Character 1⟩: No. I want to know who set this up.

The countdown speaker crackles. Twenty-five. Twenty-four.

Dev: ⟨Character 1⟩, move!

Chapter 3: The Last Minute

The countdown speaker clicks over. Twenty seconds. The vault door is a slab of cold steel, already sliding a hand's width shut.

⟨Character 1⟩: I can kill the lock. One more EMP. Same as before.

Priya: No! That kills our comms. We won't hear each other. We won't hear Ravi!

⟨Character 1⟩: Then shout louder.

A click. Every earpiece hisses and dies. The strip lights flicker, then steady. The door pauses, then keeps sliding.

Priya: You didn't trust me! I said it was too simple. I said it felt wrong. And you had to be the smartest one in the room!

⟨Character 1⟩: I was right. They set this up. Now move. Out, now.

Dev: Fifteen!

Ravi: Go, go, go!

Dev and Priya wedge through the gap. Ravi is behind them, slower, his bag catching on the frame. ⟨Character 1⟩ stops.

⟨Character 1⟩: Leave the bag!

Ravi: It's stuck!

⟨Character 1⟩ turns to run. Then he stops dead. His jacket is hanging open where the sandwich sits in the inner pocket. He reaches in and pulls it out.

⟨Character 1⟩: The sandwich.

Priya: ⟨Character 1⟩, the door!

He tucks the sandwich away and lurches for the gap. Too late. The steel slides past his shoulder and seals with a deep, final thud. On the other side, Ravi hammers the door.

Ravi: ⟨Character 1⟩! ⟨Character 1⟩, don't leave me!

⟨Character 1⟩: I'll find a way. I'll get help. Just hold on, Ravi.

Guards are shouting somewhere above. Priya is already gone. Dev is already gone. ⟨Character 1⟩ walks out into the cold night air.

⟨Character 1⟩: I told you. Software problem.

Behind him, the building's alarm bleeds into the dark. He does not look back.

⟨Character 1⟩, are you okay? Wondering where he is and what he’s lost. Goodnight.

A question for tonight
Why do you think ⟨Character 1⟩ didn't wait for the others?
