A Carpet Woven From Night

Chapter 1: The Evening Hush
Somewhere a clock was ticking more slowly than usual. The evening had come to ⟨home⟩, and ⟨Character 1⟩ were doing the last small things before sleep.
This story begins with ⟨Character 1⟩, a ⟨age⟩-year-old ⟨role⟩ who was born in ⟨birthplace⟩, now lives in ⟨home⟩, and loves ⟨favourite thing⟩. They had just turned down the light and were listening to the quiet.
Something at the window was glowing: a sky so full of stars it looked like spilt sugar. And with it drifted the dunes humming as the wind combed them, patient as a lullaby.
"We'll be back before anyone notices," said ⟨Character 1⟩, which is what everyone says at the start of a very gentle adventure. The room smelled of cool sand and mint tea.
Chapter 2: A Small Kindness
A little way into the Singing Dunes, they heard a sound that was not a sleeping sound. It was small and worried, and it came from behind a stone.
It was a tiny fennec fox. It had been following a star and lost the den where its family slept. ⟨Character 1⟩ knelt down so as not to seem too tall, and said, "Hello. We can help, if you like."
They walked together, a tiny fennec fox in the middle, until the path opened and there, waiting, was its family. There was a great deal of quiet rejoicing, which is the best kind.
Saba nodded slowly. "Kindness is the quietest magic," it said, "and it works best after dark." ⟨Character 1⟩ thought about that for a long time.
Chapter 3: Where Every Story Ends
The journey back was even slower than the journey there. Saba walked them to the edge of the Singing Dunes and waited until a flying carpet that rolled itself out across the floor and waited.
⟨Character 1⟩ closed their eyes, just to see what it felt like. It felt like cool sand and mint tea, and like floating, and like being exactly where they should be.
And then they were home, in ⟨home⟩, in their own beds, with the window closed and the room smelling faintly of cool sand and mint tea. Had they gone anywhere at all? The pillow knew, and did not say.
The dunes sang one long, low note that never quite finished. And ⟨Character 1⟩ slept. And slept. And slept. Goodnight.
