The Lighthouse That Learned to Sing

3 chapters for 2 characters · about 5 minutes · told 1 time. A lighthouse that winks at ships, a puffin keeper, and a sea as calm as glass. The highlighted parts are filled in with your own characters when you make this story yours.

Chapter 1: The Silent Light

Up the cliff path they came at a run, kite tail snapping behind them and a rolled map bouncing at her hip.

⟨Character 1⟩: Wait — ⟨Character 2⟩, stop. This is the spot. I matched the bay to my drawing, the crooked cliff and all, and this is where the tower should be. See the little pencil square? Then why is nothing glowing up there? Not one spark.

⟨Character 2⟩: Because the lantern’s dark, Zeph? Maybe the keeper forgot to say hello. I came all this way to fly my kite off a cliff and you didn’t even warn me that lights go out up here.

⟨Character 1⟩: I didn’t think they ever did. Stay behind me, I want a look inside. And keep that kite close, will you? The wind past the wall is doing things to my map.

Keeper Mira: You two are a brave pair, coming up here. No, don’t step back. The light in my tower still turns, and you can’t break that kind of thing. My trouble is this dial nobody hears. The foghorn has stopped. Tubes dry, bell full of salt. I’ve twisted what could be twisted.

⟨Character 1⟩: What if they can’t find you out in that grey? Could it matter — for boats, I mean?

Keeper Mira: It could indeed. A fishing boat is due tonight. Whole crew young, and they count on my hello in gray weather.

Down on the water, a single thin ring of a ship’s bell floated up and was gone.

⟨Character 1⟩: Hear that? That sound’s a question from them. If we can’t fix the horn, then there is another way — I’ve drawn half the coast and I map sounds the way my head holds pictures.

⟨Character 2⟩: And I can practise. With tails and winds, maybe a language. Want to teach a tower to sing, Zeph?

Chapter 2: The Kite and the Map

⟨Character 2⟩: Here, Zeph. Watch this — I’ll send a hum round the whole tower. I let the kite stop and turn with the kite line, because that keeps it in place, waiting to circle above me. Steady now—

Overhead on the vast black roof of the sea the long kite tail sang one thin note.

⟨Character 1⟩: It hears you. It’s clicking back. Don’t knot the tail line while you’re thinking, lash it on that post with your ugly sailor’s knot if you have to, because you spread sounding out to weirdest positions across the light itself. Let’s tighten, test, start again from the first chirp sounds in wind and waves.

⟨Character 2⟩: Then teach him tricks? Ship-to-shore whistles with long holds at stars the hook of the Pole? Not full tricks. Beat. It whirrs off tempo above the rocks. Its crew might swear or shut in panic-woe because heavy swells hung below all directions out in harsh caw and cliff-swish ocean ear until now says the glow and great noise cannot reach.

Keeper Mira: Halcyon my skull turn: wind howled like flock a flapping but—remember the last singer sounds across inside each gulls, winds could only snap static gaps: tower times hung over generations stood, between early keepers centuries scattered bright open listeners first lighthouse old from lonely room by clappers

Chapter 3: The Song That Guides

The wind dropped enough for the deck to hold three voices in one place.

⟨Character 1⟩: Okay, listen. I heard this at the harbor when the old men were coiling rope. It goes up steep at first, then settles. Like this. And look, on the map I made you a row of notes. Put your finger on the red coil, then follow the line to the wave.

⟨Character 2⟩: You know what my kite tail does when I pull the string twice fast? It whirrs. Whirrrrr, high up. Let me run the kite around the rail while you skip stepping, and Keeper Mira rings down there where the mark sits.

Keeper Mira: Right under the middle. My hands aren’t quick like yours, ⟨Character 2⟩, but I can keep the time. And I've been thinking. Everything that clinks and clicks in this tower will answer us if we stop feeding it gulls and wind and start giving it only one tune.

Inside the tower a low noise began, careful as someone trying the first three notes of a song on a strange instrument.

⟨Character 2⟩: It’s talking back. Faint. Now louder. That hum just turned into an actual bright ringing. ⟨Character 1⟩, I can hear it holding the whole waltz up like it’s a rope we’re pulling.

The fog thinned. A shape and a bell pulled true.

Ship: Bell there, we hear you! That melody came along the water well before we could see anything past our own bow. Three rings for you, keepers! Keep that tune where we can find it, our young crew would be floundering friendly fish if you hadn’t rung.

Keeper Mira: Look at that hand steady. Grabhold of one jar here, both of you. I salted lake mist in silver, just for a slow night many storms made me spare it out of greed before no st of this hard remembering cost precious plenty still nights worked.
